Panels fail in ways that look mysterious but usually have a short list of causes behind them. Understanding which symptoms belong together makes the visit quicker and stops parts being replaced on the off-chance.
Reading the Symptoms
Nothing on the panel at all points first at power, then at the panel's own supply from the control box. Panel lit but unresponsive usually means the panel is talking to the box but the box is not acting — a lock, an error state or a failed output. One function dead, the rest fine narrows to that button, its track on the panel, or the specific motor and its connection. An error code that keeps returning is the system naming a fault it can still detect, which is useful rather than mysterious.
Write down any code or symbol you see, and photograph the panel if you can. It is genuinely diagnostic.
What Causes Panel Faults
- Moisture. A drink spilled near the controls, condensation, or cleaning with a wet cloth. Panels are not sealed against liquid and corrosion on the contacts follows within days.
- Worn membranes and buttons. The conductive pads under the buttons wear out with use, particularly the one button that gets pressed most.
- Damaged ribbon or connector. The flat cable between panel and control box can crack with flexing or work loose from its socket.
- Control box failure. The panel can be perfectly healthy while the box behind it has failed relays or a corrupted configuration.
- Voltage problems. A failing transformer or a supply that dips when the motors start can make the panel reset or behave erratically.
- A lock or safety state. Child locks, key locks and thermal cut-outs all present as a panel that will not respond.
Our Diagnostic Sequence
We check the supply first, because a panel that resets when the motor starts is telling you about voltage, not about buttons. Then we confirm what the panel is sending — where a system supports it, a substitute panel or a control box button test separates panel from box quickly. We inspect the ribbon and connectors for corrosion and damage, and we check the box's outputs to each motor.
Only then do we talk about parts. Panels and control boxes are replaced as complete units; we do not attempt board-level repairs on mains equipment, and we do not fit a panel that is not matched to your control box. Matching matters — a panel from a similar model will often plug in and then behave unpredictably.
When It Is a Lock, Not a Fault
A surprising number of "dead panel" calls are a lock. Child locks, key switches and travel locks are there so that a bed or chair cannot be moved by accident, and they can be engaged by a cleaner, a visitor or a handset left in a pocket. We will walk you through disengaging it exactly as the manufacturer describes. What we will not do is disable a safety lock or bypass a thermal cut-out to make the furniture work — if a cut-out is tripping, it is protecting the motor from damage, and the answer is to find out why it is tripping.
Safety Around Panels and Mains Parts
Panels on mains-powered furniture are not user-serviceable. Do not remove a panel cover, do not spray cleaner into the buttons, and do not use the furniture if the panel is hot, discoloured or smells of burning — unplug it at the wall and leave it. Keep liquids away from the controls, and wipe with a barely damp cloth rather than a wet one.
If the furniture has moved on its own, or will not stop when you release a button, stop using it immediately and unplug it. Uncommanded movement is a fault that needs looking at before anyone uses the furniture again.
Repair or Replace
Panels and control boxes are the two parts most often replaced, and both are straightforward swaps once the correct match is confirmed. The judgement call comes on older systems where a replacement box is no longer made. In that case we will explain what is available and let you weigh a compatible replacement set against the cost of new furniture, rather than pushing either option.
Booking the Visit
Tell us the make and model, what the panel does and does not do, and any code it shows. If the furniture is currently unusable, say so — it affects how soon you need us. The booking fee is paid when you book, labour runs hourly at a rate that depends on notice, and the full cost of the work is quoted for your approval before we begin.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
The control panel is where you meet the machine, so when it misbehaves the whole piece of furniture feels broken. Symptoms range from a dead display to a panel that lights up but will not accept commands, and from a single dead function to an error code that returns every time you clear it. Sorting it out means testing the panel and the control box as a pair, because either can produce the same behaviour.

Questions people ask about control panel fault
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I clean or reset the panel myself?
You can wipe the panel with a barely damp cloth and, if your manual describes a reset sequence, follow it exactly. Do not spray cleaner into the buttons, remove the panel cover or open the control box — these are mains parts. If a lock symbol is showing, the manual will describe how to disengage it.
What do you check first?
The supply, because a panel that resets when a motor starts is a voltage problem rather than a button problem. Then we establish what the panel is sending, inspect the ribbon and connectors for corrosion, and test the control box outputs to each motor so we can identify the failed part with confidence.
Will you disable the safety lock to make it work?
No. Locks and thermal cut-outs exist to stop the furniture moving when it should not, and to protect the motors from damage. We will help you disengage a lock properly, in the way the manufacturer describes, but we will not bypass or disable a safety device — if a cut-out keeps tripping, we find out why.
The furniture moved on its own — is that serious?
Yes, treat it as serious. Uncommanded movement or a mechanism that will not stop when you release a button means the furniture should be unplugged and not used until it has been checked. Mention it when you book so we treat it as a priority rather than a routine panel fault.
How much will the repair be?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We diagnose first, then quote the full cost of the work for you to approve before anything is done. A replacement panel or control box is quoted separately once the correct match is confirmed.
