How a multipoint lock works
Lift the handle on a UPVC or composite door and you are driving a gearbox set in the door's edge, which pushes rods to throw hooks, rollers or deadbolts into keeps set into the frame. Three systems have to agree: the door's position on its hinges, the position of the keeps, and the condition of the gearbox and its moving parts. When a multipoint lock stops working, any of the three can be the cause — which is why the lock itself is the last thing we blame, not the first.
Why most "failed" locks are alignment problems
The classic symptoms: the handle lifts but the key will not turn, you have to slam and shove the door, or the mechanism only engages if someone lifts the door by the handle while turning the key. Nearly always the door has dropped slightly on its hinges or the frame has shifted with the seasons, so the hooks and rollers are meeting keeps that are a couple of millimetres out. The mechanism strains every time it is forced, and eventually something genuinely breaks — usually a part that a timely adjustment would have saved for a fraction of the cost.
Working through it in order
We diagnose in sequence. First alignment: how far the door sits out of square against the frame, hinge wear, and whether the keeps need moving or replacing. Next the hardware: the handle springs, the spindle, and whether the handle returns properly after lifting. Only then the gearbox itself: does the mechanism turn smoothly, does the handle spin without engaging, is there grinding or a dead spot in the travel? Realignment and keep adjustment solve a large share of multipoint calls on their own, and we do that work before recommending anything more expensive.
Gearbox faults and parts
When the gearbox has genuinely failed — a limp handle, a handle that spins without engaging, a mechanism frozen mid-throw — replacement is often possible, and here parts condition and availability matter more than anything else. Multipoint gearboxes are made by a handful of manufacturers and fitted into dozens of door brands; the make and model stamped on the lock's faceplate decides whether an exact replacement exists or a compatible alternative has to be adapted to the door. Discontinued units can mean a longer search or a conversion to a different system, and we explain the options and costs before ordering anything. We do not guess a gearbox model from a photo and call it compatible.
Limits and honesty
A multipoint lock that is not throwing means the door is not properly secured, and we will say so and prioritise getting the door to lock within the visit. We are equally direct about what a repair cannot do: if the door slab itself has twisted beyond what hinges and keeps can compensate for, adjustment is a stopgap and a new door or door set is the real answer. We will tell you that rather than chase the door with adjustments forever.
Caring for the mechanism
Always lift the handle fully before turning the key, never slam the door into the frame, and lubricate the moving parts lightly once or twice a year following the manufacturer's guidance. If the door starts needing a shove again, call before it breaks — realignment is a small job; a new gearbox is not.
Booking
We cover the West Midlands. Same-day appointments may be available depending on when you call, which matters when the fault leaves your door unsecured. A booking fee is paid when you reserve; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved by you before work starts. Any replacement gearbox, keeps or hardware is identified and quoted separately, and you approve it before it is ordered.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Questions people ask about multi-point lock repair
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I adjust a UPVC door's multipoint lock myself?
Keep adjustments with an Allen key are within reach of careful DIYers, and they are worth trying before calling anyone out. The risk is over-adjustment that leaves the door proud of its weather seal, or chasing a gearbox fault with alignment changes until something breaks. If the handle is limp, spins, or grinds, stop adjusting and get the mechanism diagnosed.
How do you diagnose a multipoint lock fault?
In order: alignment first, looking at how the door sits against the frame and whether the keeps line up; then the handle, spindle and hardware; and only then the gearbox itself. That order matters because most faults are alignment, and gearbox replacement is the expensive end. We repair what is actually wrong rather than starting with the priciest explanation.
What if the gearbox is discontinued?
Then we explain the options honestly: search for a compatible alternative, adapt the door to a different lock system, or in the worst case consider a new door set. The make and model stamped on the lock's faceplate drives this, which is why we never guess a gearbox model from a photo. We quote before ordering anything.
How do I find out what lock is in my door?
Look at the metal strip — the faceplate — on the door's edge; the manufacturer's name is usually stamped there, sometimes with a model number. Photograph it and the handles, both sides. That one photo often saves a wasted part order, so include it when you book if you can.
How is multipoint lock repair priced?
A booking fee is paid when you reserve the slot, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved by you before work starts. Any replacement gearbox, keeps or hardware is identified and quoted separately, and you approve it before it is ordered.
