What Counts as an Outdoor Electrical Emergency

Not every fault is an emergency, and it helps to know the difference. These are:

  • Sparking or arcing — from any socket, fitting or cable, whether or not it is in use.
  • Burning smells, smoke or scorching — hot-plastic smells, visible charring, or anything hot to the touch near electrical equipment.
  • Water where it should not be — water inside or running over any fitting, or flooding that has reached electrical equipment.
  • Exposed live parts — damaged fittings, torn-out sockets, or cut cable with conductors visible and the circuit still live.
  • Electric shock or tingling — anyone receiving a shock or feeling tingling from garden metalwork, equipment or fittings needs the circuit isolated and inspected immediately.
  • Total loss of power with a device that will not reset — an RCD or breaker that trips and will not stay reset indicates a real fault on the circuit.

What To Do Before We Arrive

Safety first, and it is a short list. Switch the affected circuit off at the consumer unit if you can reach it safely and the unit itself is dry and undamaged. Keep everyone — especially children and pets — well away from the faulty equipment, wet areas and anything sparking or hot. Do not touch fittings that are hot, smoking or sparking, and do not try to dry, open or repair anything yourself. If there is smoke or fire, call the fire service first and us afterwards. If someone has received a shock, seek medical attention; electrical shocks need checking even when the person feels fine afterwards.

What We Do on Arrival

The first job is always making the situation safe: the affected circuits are isolated and confirmed dead, the faulty equipment is inspected from a safe state, and anything dangerous is removed from service. Then we diagnose. Emergency visits aim to restore safety and, where the repair is straightforward, restore power in the same visit. Where a proper repair needs more time or parts, we leave the area safe and the circuit isolated, agree the plan with you, and return to complete it — you are never left with a live fault or an unexplained silence.

How the Repair Proceeds

The emergency cause is repaired at its source: a burnt connection is remade, a waterlogged fitting is replaced with weatherproof (IP-rated) equipment, damaged cable is cut out and rejoined properly, and anything that cannot be trusted is replaced rather than patched. The circuit is tested — insulation, continuity and RCD operation — before power is restored, and we check every fitting on the affected circuit, because one fault often has neighbours.

After the Emergency

Once things are calm, it is worth understanding what happened, because outdoor emergencies rarely come from nowhere. We will explain the cause and what would have prevented it — a failed seal, an overloaded circuit, aging equipment — and advise on anything else on the circuit that is showing its age. A short follow-up check of the whole outdoor system is often worthwhile after a serious fault.

When to Call Rather Than Book Online

For anything on the emergency list above, call — talking to us means we can advise on isolation immediately and prioritise your visit. For non-urgent faults, a dead socket, a tired fitting, a planned installation — the online booking is the faster route and gets the same engineers, just on a calmer timetable.

Book Your Emergency Call-Out Now

We cover the West Midlands and hold same-day and emergency slots specifically for urgent outdoor electrical faults. Call us now if you are facing sparking, burning, water ingress, exposed wiring or a shock incident — describe what you can see and what you have already switched off, and we will take it from there. Fast arrival, safe isolation, and a proper repair once the danger is past.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

If you are facing an outdoor electrical emergency, switch off what you safely can and call us.

What our customers say about our electrical service

4.6 out of 5 from 11 reviews

Does what it says on the tin

No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.

Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement

Fixed it, but took longer than expected

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights

Turned up when they said

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about emergency outdoor electrical fault

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Should I switch everything off at the mains?

Switch off the affected circuit at the consumer unit if you can reach it safely and the unit itself is dry and undamaged. If you are unsure which circuit is which, or the consumer unit is in a wet or damaged area, leave it alone and keep your distance instead — we will isolate it on arrival. Never walk through standing water to reach the board.

Someone got a small shock from outdoor equipment — is that serious?

Yes, treat it seriously. Any shock means live parts are reachable somewhere they should not be, and the same fault will still be there for the next person. Seek medical advice for the person who was shocked — even mild shocks deserve checking — and keep the equipment isolated and unused until we have inspected the circuit.

How quickly can you get to an emergency?

We hold same-day and emergency slots for urgent faults, and how fast we reach you depends on demand and how far you are. When you call, describe the danger clearly — sparking, burning, water, exposed wiring — because that determines priority. We will give you an honest arrival time rather than a vague promise.

What does an emergency call-out cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us — emergency attendance is at the higher rate. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.

Will the power be back on the same visit?

Often, yes — when the fault is straightforward we repair and restore power in the same visit. Where the repair needs parts or more time, we leave the faulty circuit safely isolated and the rest of your electrics working, agree the plan and price with you, and return promptly to finish. Safety first, then power.
