Surface water gullies are the workhorses of external drainage — the gratings in drives, paths and yards that take rainwater into the system. When one blocks, the evidence is immediate: water standing or rising around the grating, silt and debris washing back, and in prolonged rain the area around it flooding. The good news is that most gully blockages are straightforward to clear properly.
Why gullies block
Leaves are the classic cause, especially each autumn — they wash into the grating and pack the trap below. Silt, grit and soil wash in from drives and unpaved ground, and build up gradually in the trap and the run. Roof debris — moss, tile grit — comes down the downpipes. In yards and commercial settings, general debris and even dropped items end up in the trap. And sometimes the gully is not the problem at all: the blockage sits downstream in the pipe run or the soakaway has silted, so the gully merely shows the symptom. That is why clearing the gully without checking the run sometimes leads to it blocking again days later.
How we clear and check
We lift the grating and clear the trap by hand and rod, then rod or jet the downstream run to confirm water is actually moving — a gully that drains for an hour and then backs up again has a blockage further along. If the run serves a soakaway, we assess whether that is accepting water. We check the gully's fall and condition while we are there, because a gully set too flat or a cracked trap collects silt faster than a healthy one. Before any digging or lifting beyond the grating we check for buried services; detectors help, but no scan guarantees what is below, and utility plans are yours to provide.
One important caution: never tip caustic supermarket drain chemicals into external gullies. They can damage old pipework, harm the surrounding ground and make the blockage harder to clear safely — and if you have already used any, tell us before we attend so we can work appropriately.
Responsibility boundaries
Gullies on your own drive, path or yard are yours. Gullies set in the highway — the road or pavement — belong to the council or water company, and we help you establish which is which, though we cannot guarantee adoption status. If the blocked gully sits on the highway, the right first step is often the council's drainage team, and we will tell you so honestly rather than charge you for work that is not ours to do.
Preventing the next blockage
Fit or maintain a grating guard or leaf guard in autumn, sweep leaves away from gratings rather than letting rain wash them in, and empty gully silt buckets where fitted. If the same gully blocks repeatedly, that is a message about falls, trap condition or something downstream — worth a proper look rather than a third clearing.
Booking
Book a visit and tell us which gully is blocked, how long it has been backing up, and whether others nearby are slow too — multiple slow gullies suggest a downstream problem. Keep vehicles clear of the area for access. Clearing within the visit is charged at our standard rates; if the run or soakaway turns out to need larger work, that is quoted before we start.
A note on timing: gully blockages get dramatically worse in heavy rain, so calls often spike during storms, and visits are arranged as quickly as we can with the notice given — sooner booking typically means a sooner slot, which is why our hourly rate varies with urgency. If the gully is backing up towards a door, garage or cellar, say so when you book; water heading into a building changes the priority, and there are interim measures such as sandbagging that we can talk you through on the phone.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A blocked surface water gully backs up quickly and reliably ruins the area around it — pooling water, silt, smells and in winter, ice. We clear the blockage properly rather than poke at it, check the run downstream to confirm water is actually leaving, and tell you if the blockage points to a bigger problem. Most gully blockages are same-visit fixes.
What our customers say about our drainage service
4.2 out of 5 from 5 reviews
Fast, tidy and friendly
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the part had to be sourced locally), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Standing Water in Shower Tray
Happy overall
Good job overall. Turned up about 15 minutes after the window started, but rang to say so, and the work itself was tidy and well explained. Price was as quoted.
Job: Partial Soil Stack Blockage
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Questions people ask about blocked surface water gully
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I unblock a gully myself?
Lifting the grating and clearing visible leaves and debris from the trap is reasonable DIY, and a drain rod from the gully is fine too. What is not DIY is jetting runs, digging up the gully or chasing a blockage deep into the system — rods can push a partial blockage further in, and old pipework can be damaged by force. And never pour caustic supermarket chemicals into outdoor gullies; if you already have, tell us before we attend.
What do you actually do to clear a blocked gully?
We lift the grating, clear the trap by hand and rod, then rod or jet the downstream run to confirm water is genuinely leaving — a gully that re-blocks quickly has a problem further along. We check the gully's condition and falls while there, and if the run serves a soakaway, we assess whether it is still taking water.
Could the blockage be somewhere I'm not responsible for?
Possibly. Gullies on your drive, path or yard are yours to maintain, but gullies set in the highway belong to the council or water company — we help establish which is which, though we cannot guarantee adoption status. If your gully is fine but backs up when the highway system is overwhelmed, the highway side is the root cause.
My gully keeps blocking every few months — why?
Repeated blockage usually has a cause beyond leaves: a gully set too flat or a damaged trap collecting silt, a partial restriction downstream, or a soakaway losing capacity. We will check those things rather than clear and leave, because clearing alone treats the symptom. If a bigger fix is needed we quote it after looking, before any work starts.
What does clearing a gully cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the clearing work is quoted before we start, so you approve it first, and any parts — a replacement grating or trap, say — are quoted separately. If downstream work turns out to be needed, that is quoted before anything begins.
