A foul smell from a drain is unpleasant but it is also useful information. Combined with slow drainage, it almost always points to waste held in the pipe; on its own, it can mean a dried trap, a damaged seal or a venting problem. Sorting out which saves time and money.

Why a slow drain smells

Waste that sits in a pipe rather than passing through it begins to break down, and the gases that come off it are what you can smell. A partial blockage is enough: the pipe still passes water, so the fitting drains, but the flow is too slow to scour the walls, and a film of waste builds up. Over weeks that film thickens, the smell gets stronger and the drainage gets slower. Sulphides in that film also corrode the pipe and attack rubber seals, so a long-standing smell is worth taking seriously as a sign of deterioration rather than just an annoyance.

If the smell is stronger in one room, or appears when a particular fitting is used, that narrows the search considerably. A bathroom smell that appears after the toilet flushes is usually a branch problem; a smell in a kitchen under a sink is usually the trap.

What we check

We ask where the smell is strongest, when it appears, and whether any fitting gurgles or drains slowly. Then we check the traps on the affected fittings — a bath or basin trap that has dried out through lack of use, a washing machine standpipe without a proper trap, a shower waste with a shallow seal. A dry trap is the simplest possible cause and the easiest to fix.

Next we test the flow at each fitting and look for the restriction. Rodding or jetting from the nearest access point clears the pipe and, just as importantly, scours the walls so the film of waste goes with it. A clearance that only punches a hole through a blockage will leave the smell behind, which is why we flush through properly rather than just getting water moving.

Seals, joints and vents

If the pipe clears and the smell persists, the cause is elsewhere. A perished pan connector, a cracked trap, a joint that has pulled apart under a floor, or a soil stack with a failed seal will all let sewer gas into the building. Venting matters too: a stack that is blocked at the top, or a branch without adequate venting, can pull the water out of traps and let smells through.

Finding those takes a bit more work — sometimes a smoke test, sometimes a camera, sometimes simply inspecting every accessible joint. We will tell you what we have ruled out as we go, rather than replacing parts on suspicion.

What you can do before we come

Run water in every trap in the house, including the bath, the spare basin and any shower that is rarely used; a trap that has dried out is a very common cause of a smell in an unused room. Check that the washing machine standpipe has water in its trap. Open a window and ventilate, and keep the door to the affected room closed so the smell does not spread through the house.

Do not pour caustic chemicals down the drain to deal with a smell. They do not remove the film that causes it, they can damage seals and traps and they will not address a venting problem. If you have used any, tell us.

After the clearance

A drain that has been properly cleared and scoured should stop smelling within a day or so, once the residual gas has dispersed. If it does not, that is worth a follow-up rather than another dose of air freshener. Keeping fats and food waste out of the kitchen drain, and using a hair catch in the bathroom, prevents most of the film from forming in the first place.

To book, tell us the postcode, where the smell is worst, which fittings are slow, and whether any of them are rarely used. If the smell appeared after building work or a change to the plumbing, mention that too.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A drain that smells and drains sluggishly is usually telling you the same thing twice. Waste sitting in the pipe ferments, and the smell comes back up through the nearest fitting. Clearing the restriction addresses both, but it is worth checking the traps and seals as well, because sometimes a smell has a separate cause.

What our customers say about our drainage service

4.2 out of 5 from 5 reviews

Fast, tidy and friendly

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the part had to be sourced locally), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Standing Water in Shower Tray

Happy overall

Good job overall. Turned up about 15 minutes after the window started, but rang to say so, and the work itself was tidy and well explained. Price was as quoted.

Job: Partial Soil Stack Blockage

Fixed it, but took longer than expected

The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Questions people ask about foul smelling drain blockage

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I just use a drain freshener or bleach?

Neither fixes the cause. Bleach masks a smell for a day or two and does nothing about the film of waste in the pipe or a failed seal. It can also damage rubber components. Clearing the restriction and checking the traps is what actually removes the smell.

What do you check on the visit?

We test the flow at each fitting, inspect the accessible traps and seals, and clear the restriction from the nearest access point, flushing through to scour the pipe walls. If the smell persists we look at joints, the pan connector and the venting.

Is a smelly drain dangerous?

Sewer gas is not something to breathe in a confined space over time, and the film that causes the smell also corrodes pipes and seals. It is not usually an emergency, but it should not be ignored, and any smell inside a room with no window is worth attention sooner.

Why does the spare bathroom smell when nobody uses it?

Almost certainly a dried-out trap. Water in the trap is the seal that keeps sewer gas out, and it evaporates when a fitting is unused. Running the tap for a minute or two each week usually prevents it, and we can check the trap is the right type while we are there.

What will it cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, parts quoted separately, so the full cost is approved before any tools come out. If a trap, pan connector or seal needs replacing, that is quoted separately once we have seen the fitting.
