Excessive vibration is the washing machine fault homeowners most often put up with for far too long. A machine that thumps, shakes or literally walks across the kitchen floor is not normal, and every violent cycle shortens its life and risks damage to floors, tiling and the water connections behind it. Very often the cause is something simple and entirely fixable, so it is worth having it checked properly rather than enduring it.

Why machines vibrate violently

Start with the simplest explanations. If the machine is new or was recently moved, transit bolts may still be in place – the fixings that hold the drum still during delivery, which must be removed before use. Unlevel machines rock on their feet and amplify every drum movement. An unstable floor, especially a suspended wooden floor or a machine standing on a worn laminate, adds its own resonance. Then there is loading: a single heavy item, an overloaded drum or a load bunched to one side defeats the balance system and produces violent thumping on spin. If those are all ruled out, mechanical causes remain: worn suspension springs, failed dampers, loose drum counterweights or a drum bearing on its way out. Worn bearings typically announce themselves with rumbling as well as shake.

What we check and adjust

The visit starts with the fundamentals. We check that transit bolts are absent, test the machine for rock and level it properly on its feet, and look at what it stands on – a machine on a bouncy wooden floor sometimes needs repositioning or simple support advice rather than repair. We check the load balance behaviour by discussing what you wash and how. If levelling and loading check out, we inspect the suspension: springs for stretching or breakage, dampers for wear, and the counterweight fixings for looseness. Any mechanical finding is explained clearly and quoted before work proceeds. The aim is a machine that stands still and quiet through the fastest spin, and a diagnosis that tells you whether anything is wearing out underneath.

Fixes, parts and honest limits

Many vibration problems need no parts at all – correct levelling, bolt removal and load advice resolve a large share of them. Worn dampers and suspension springs are replaceable on most makes, though availability and cost vary by model, and we confirm both before quoting. Loose counterweight fixings are tightened. If the vibration proves to be the leading edge of bearing wear, we will say so plainly and set out the repair-versus-replace options honestly, because that is a different conversation. We do not promise that every machine can be made showroom-quiet; some floors and some machines simply have character, but violent shaking is always worth fixing.

Safety and interim measures

Until the visit, keep loads balanced and sensible, and avoid overloading. If the machine walks, do not wedge it against the wall – wedging hides the symptom and stresses the hoses. Check visually that the inlet and drain hoses are not being strained or kinked by movement. If the shaking is new and severe, or comes with grinding or burning smells, stop using the machine rather than running it to destruction. Do not open the machine's panels to look at the suspension yourself; the drum assembly is heavy and the internals are not user-serviceable.

Booking the visit

Contact Maintenance Men by phone or the website, telling us the brand and model, whether the machine is new or recently moved, whether the shaking happens on every spin or only certain loads, and what the machine stands on. You pay the booking fee when booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and any repair is quoted in full and approved by you before it starts. Same-day attendance may be possible where the diary allows – we never promise it.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A washing machine that shakes so hard it walks across the floor is more than a nuisance – it loosens connections, cracks tiles and stresses the machine's own parts. Many vibration faults trace back to levelling or fitting, not broken components. We check each possibility in turn and put the machine right.

Questions people ask about washing machine vibrating excessively

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I level the machine myself?

Yes, this is genuinely suitable DIY. With the machine unloaded, check it rocks front to back and side to side, and adjust the screw-in feet until it stands firm. A spirit level helps. If it still shakes violently when perfectly level and on a solid floor, the cause is mechanical and worth a diagnosis.

What are transit bolts and why do they matter?

They are heavy bolts fitted at the back of a new machine to lock the drum for transport. If they are left in or only partly removed, the machine shakes enormously and can damage itself. They must be removed before use – if you have recently moved or bought the machine, check the back before booking.

Is it bad to keep using a machine that shakes?

Yes, over time it is. Persistent violent vibration strains hoses and connections, works fixings loose, wears the suspension faster and can crack tiled floors. If the shaking is severe or new, get it checked promptly rather than waiting for something behind the machine to fail.

Could the floor be the problem rather than the machine?

It can be. Machines on suspended wooden floors, especially upstairs, often amplify normal spin into real vibration, and a worn or bouncy floor makes it worse. We assess the machine and its standing during the visit and will tell you honestly if repositioning or floor support is the answer rather than parts.

How much does the visit cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, so more notice means a better rate. We quote the full cost before starting and you approve it. Any parts, such as dampers or springs, are quoted separately after diagnosis.
