Few laundry faults are as frustrating as a machine that washes happily and then refuses to spin. Clothes come out heavy and dripping, and the cycle sometimes ends without any error at all. The causes range from trivial to mechanical, and the right fix depends on finding the true culprit rather than guessing. Here is what usually happens behind the drum, and how we go about diagnosing it.

Why the spin stage is skipped or fails

A modern machine will deliberately abandon a spin if it cannot safely begin. If the door lock has not engaged, or the lock has failed, the machine refuses to spin as a safety measure. An unbalanced or overloaded drum triggers the same protection: the machine tries to distribute the load, gives up and ends the cycle with the clothes still wet. Water left in the drum is another frequent cause, because most machines will not spin while the pump has failed or the drain hose is blocked. Beyond those protections, genuine mechanical faults include a stretched or snapped drive belt, worn motor brushes, a faulty tacho sensor or a failing motor itself. Bearings worn to the point of rumbling can also slow the drum until the machine cannot reach spin speed.

What we check first

Our diagnosis follows the machine's own logic. We start with the easy eliminations: whether the machine is draining properly, whether the door locks with a positive click, and whether a small or heavily unbalanced load is being used. Then we run a test cycle and watch the machine reach the spin stage, listening and observing as it tries. From there we inspect the belt for wear or tension, check the pump, and test the motor and its associated sensors with the power safely isolated. Error codes and fault-light patterns are recorded and interpreted against the manufacturer's information.

Repair or replace options

Many spin faults have genuinely economical fixes. Resetting an unbalanced load costs nothing; clearing a filter or freeing a drain path can transform the machine's behaviour; a replacement belt or door lock is a common, affordable repair on most makes. Motor brushes and tacho sensors are also frequently repairable. A failed motor or a machine with badly worn bearings, on the other hand, can be uneconomic to fix, particularly on older or budget models. We will tell you plainly which situation you are in, quote for the repair where it makes sense, and never push work that is not in your interest.

Safety and what not to attempt

Please do not force the door open mid-cycle, bypass the lock, or tip the machine back to work underneath it. Washers hold residual water and mix mains power with a wet environment. If the drum seems seized or you hear grinding metal, stop using the machine; forcing it can turn a bearing or belt problem into a motor failure. We isolate the power before any internal inspection, and so should anyone attempting any check beyond the filter hatch.

Booking your diagnosis

Call Maintenance Men or use the website contact form, and tell us the brand and model number, whether the machine drains normally, whether the door clicks locked, and whether the fault happens on every load or only certain ones. That information lets us arrive with the likely parts knowledge already in hand. The booking fee is paid when you book, the hourly rate depends on how quickly you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved before any repair starts. Same-day attendance may be available where the diary allows, but we will never promise it.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

When a washer finishes its wash but leaves the clothes sodden, the spin stage has either been skipped or failed. Causes range from an unbalanced load or a blocked drain to worn belts and motor faults. We diagnose the actual reason on site, so you know whether the answer is a five-minute adjustment or a component replacement.

Questions people ask about washing machine not spinning

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Why does my machine spin sometimes but not others?

Intermittent spinning is usually the machine's own protection at work. A load that is too small, too large or bunched to one side stops the spin, as does a drain fault on some cycles. Note which loads fail and tell us, because that pattern points strongly to load balance or drainage rather than a broken part.

Could it just be the load I am washing?

Yes, often. Single items like a duvet or a few heavy garments bunch together and defeat the balance sensor. Try redistributing the load and running a spin again. If the machine still refuses with a sensible mixed load, the fault is mechanical or electrical and needs diagnosis.

Will you replace the belt on the first visit?

Only if diagnosis confirms the belt is the fault and you approve the quote. Belts are a common repair, but the same symptom can come from the motor, lock or pump, so we confirm the cause first rather than swapping parts on the chance.

Is a grinding noise during spin the same fault?

No. Grinding, rumbling or knocking suggests bearings, a foreign object or drum wear, which is a different diagnosis from a machine that simply will not spin. Mention any noises when booking, as the sound profile helps us form an early picture of the fault.

What does the repair cost?

There is a booking fee paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, so more notice usually costs less. The full cost is quoted and you approve it before work starts. Parts identified as needed are quoted separately and are not included in the labour figure.
