Opening the door at the end of a cycle to find the drum still full of water is a dispiriting moment, and it usually happens at the worst possible time. The reassuring news is that drainage faults are among the most common and most fixable washing machine problems. Water goes nowhere only when something specific is stopping it, and that something is usually found and cleared within a single visit.

Why the water stays in the drum

The drain path is simple in principle: water leaves the drum, passes the filter, runs through the pump and out along the drain hose to the standpipe or under-sink connection. A blockage at any point in that chain produces the same symptom. Coins, hairpins, buttons and even small socks lodge in the filter; fluff and grease build up over months; the drain hose kinks behind the machine or the standpipe becomes blocked with lint. The pump itself can also fail, through seized impellers, jammed objects or burnt-out windings. Occasionally the fault lies with the machine's control of the pump rather than the pump, which is why proper diagnosis matters before any part is replaced.

How we trace and clear the fault

We start by isolating the power and water, then drain the standing water as safely as we can. The filter comes out first, because it is the most common hiding place for debris, and we inspect the pump chamber behind it for foreign objects. Next we check the pump runs when it should, listening for the humming of a stalled impeller or the silence of a dead pump. We examine the drain hose for kinks and restrictions and, where accessible, check the standpipe or sink connection for blockages in the household plumbing. Only when the fault is confirmed do we talk about repairs.

Repairs, parts and honest advice

A blocked filter or hose needs no parts at all, just time and care. If the pump has failed, most brands have replaceable pumps that are straightforward to fit, and we can usually source them, although availability varies between models and some machines have less common pump designs. If the blockage sits in the household's own pipework rather than the machine, we will tell you, because that changes who fixes what. And if diagnosis reveals a deeper fault, such as a control board issue, we will explain that honestly rather than selling you a pump that will not solve the problem.

Safety and what to avoid

Resist the urge to open the door on a flooded drum; hundreds of litres of panic follow. Do not run the machine repeatedly hoping it will clear itself, because a stalled pump can overheat. If you attempt the filter yourself, unplug the machine first and expect water – lay towels and drain slowly into a shallow tray. If the filter will not turn, do not force it; forcing a seized filter cap can break the housing and turn a five-minute job into a repair.

Getting the visit booked

Contact Maintenance Men by phone or through the website and tell us the brand and model, how much water is standing in the drum, whether the pump makes any noise at the drain stage, and whether the machine is plumbed to a standpipe or under the sink. You pay the booking fee when booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us, and any repair is quoted in full for your approval before we start. Debris blockages are usually dealt with in the first visit; pump replacements depend on part availability. We will confirm which applies to your machine when we visit.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A drum full of water at the end of the cycle means the machine cannot empty, and the cause is often a blocked filter, hose or pump rather than a broken machine. We work through the whole drain path systematically, clear what is blocking it, and confirm the pump is healthy before we leave.

Questions people ask about washing machine not draining

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I clear the filter myself?

Yes, if you unplug the machine first and take care with the water. Most filters sit behind a small hatch at the bottom front, and draining into a shallow tray is normal. If the cap will not turn or the machine still will not drain afterwards, stop and book a visit rather than forcing anything.

What exactly gets checked during the visit?

We isolate power and water, clear standing water, remove and clean the filter, inspect the pump chamber for lodged objects, test the pump operation, and check the drain hose and its connection point for kinks or blockages. We then explain the cause and quote before any repair.

My pump hums but no water leaves – is it broken?

Not necessarily. A humming pump usually means it has power but something is stopping the impeller turning, often a coin, button or hard object lodged in the chamber. That is often clearable without a new pump. A silent pump is the one more likely to have failed electrically.

Could the blockage be in my house plumbing rather than the machine?

Yes, occasionally. If the standpipe or under-sink waste is blocked, the machine drains correctly but the water cannot escape the house. We will identify where the blockage sits during diagnosis, and if it is the household plumbing we will explain what needs to happen next.

How is the visit priced?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, so giving us notice works in your favour. We quote the full cost before starting work and you approve it. Parts, such as a replacement pump, are identified during diagnosis and quoted separately.
