A new hob transforms a kitchen — until the installation goes wrong and it becomes a weekend of frustration instead. Fitting a hob is genuinely more than dropping it into a hole: the supply has to suit the appliance, the connections have to be right, and the whole thing has to be tested before the first pan goes on. That's the job we do, and we do it with the checks that make the difference between a hob that works and one that trips, overheats or disappoints.

Before the visit: choosing and checking

Two things are worth settling before installation day. First, the hob itself — electric, ceramic or induction for our installation, since gas connections are gas work we don't carry out (more on that below). Second, the practicalities: the worktop cut-out size, the space beneath for the hob's depth, and whether the existing supply can feed the new appliance. A like-for-like replacement usually uses the existing circuit; a switch to a more powerful hob may need electrical work first. Tell us the new hob's model when booking and we'll flag anything obvious before we arrive.

What the installation visit covers

We verify the supply circuit and isolator are adequate and safe, make the connection to the manufacturer's specification, secure the hob in the cut-out with the right clamping, check clearances and surrounding materials, and then test the appliance thoroughly — controls, every zone, safety cut-outs — before handing it over. You get a walkthrough of the controls and any model-specific features, and we take the packaging away if you'd like.

If the visit reveals that the cut-out needs adjusting or the supply needs upgrading, we stop and quote that work separately for your approval rather than improvising. Installation appointments are defined visits: the fit itself plus the checks, with anything beyond quoted honestly.

The gas boundary, stated plainly

If your new hob is gas, its connection and commissioning are gas work. Maintenance Men is not Gas Safe registered and never carries out gas work — we don't connect, disconnect, commission or alter gas appliances or supply. For a gas hob, we recommend a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer with whom we work closely, who will connect, test and commission the appliance and quote their work directly. We're happy to explain the sequence so nothing catches you out.

What we need from you

The hob, on site and unopened if possible, plus a clear run of access to the worktop and the isolation point underneath. If the old hob is still connected, we can arrange its disconnection as part of the visit for electric models — for a gas hob, disconnection of the supply is again Gas Safe work. Customer-supplied appliances are the norm: you buy the hob, we fit and test it safely.

Preparation that makes the day go smoothly

A few things done before we arrive save real time: clear the worktop and the cupboard beneath the hob, make sure the isolation point is reachable, and have the new hob's packaging opened but the unit intact until we need it. If an old hob is being removed, decide where it goes — most customers ask us to take it. And if the property is tenanted or newly bought, check who's responsible for the electrical work so approvals can happen on the day rather than by phone from work.

Booking your installation

Contact us with the new hob's brand, model and type, whether it replaces an existing hob or goes into a new cut-out, and any access constraints. Book by phone or website; the booking fee is paid when you book, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and any additional work beyond the defined installation is quoted in full and approved by you before it starts.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A new hob needs more than lifting it into the worktop: the supply must be adequate, the connections sound and the fit safe. Maintenance Men installs electric and induction hobs within electrical competence, checks everything before switching on, and arranges Gas Safe engineers for any gas connection.

Job: Tumble Dryer Not Starting Cycle

Good job, slightly late

Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.

Job: Toaster Not Working

No mess left behind

Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about hob installation

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can you install my gas hob?

We install electric and induction hobs, but gas connections are gas work — Maintenance Men is not Gas Safe registered and never carries out gas work. For a gas hob, we recommend a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer who will connect and commission it properly.

What does a hob installation involve?

Checking the supply circuit and isolator are suitable for the new hob, connecting it to the manufacturer's specification, securing it in the worktop cut-out, and testing it safely before handover. If the existing cut-out or supply doesn't suit, we explain what's needed first.

Do I need a new circuit for my new hob?

Some hobs need a dedicated cooker circuit rated for their load; a like-for-like swap usually doesn't. We check your supply during the visit and tell you honestly if extra electrical work is required, quoted separately and approved before proceeding.

What do I need to provide?

The hob itself, purchased to suit your kitchen, plus any manufacturer accessories. We bring the tools and materials for connection; any additional parts specific to your installation are identified and quoted before purchase.

How is installation priced?

A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The visit is a defined installation slot; if extra work emerges, it's quoted in full and approved by you before it starts.
