The control board sits in the operator's housing or a separate panel and makes every decision your gate takes: when to run, how fast, when to reverse, when to lock out. When it fails, the symptoms spread across the whole system — remotes seem dead, motors behave oddly, safety devices appear to fault — and it is easy to conclude the wrong component is to blame. That is why a proper diagnosis comes before any board is replaced.
What the Control Board Actually Does
Modern boards read inputs from remotes, keypads, intercoms and photocells; drive the motor through its acceleration and deceleration; enforce force limits and obstruction detection; manage battery backup and charging; and store settings like auto-close timers and partial opening. Some boards display fault codes or indicator flashes that translate directly to the problem — a skill in itself, but one that turns diagnosis from guesswork into reading.
Why Boards Fail
The West Midlands weather is the main enemy. Water ingress into a control box corrodes tracks and terminations until the board behaves erratically or dies. Condensation in unsealed or badly sited panels does the same more slowly. Power events — surges, lightning strikes in the area, supply faults — damage input and motor-drive sections. Age takes its toll too: relays and capacitors wear, and very old boards fail in ways that make partial repair unreliable. Rodents nesting in warm panels are a recurring and genuinely common cause of damage.
Signs That Point to the Board
Some patterns suggest the board rather than its peripherals: several different functions failing at once, fault codes or indicator sequences on the display, a gate that has lost its settings after each power cut, outputs that stay live when they should not, or a system that started misbehaving immediately after a storm or supply event. None of these is conclusive on its own, which is why we test rather than assume.
How We Test a Suspect Board
We test everything connected before condemning the board: supply voltage and quality, the motor and its wiring, the photocells and safety edges, remotes and receivers, and the battery backup. Only when the peripherals are proven healthy do we diagnose the board itself — inputs, outputs, power sections and settings. If the board is genuinely faulty, we will show you the evidence: what we measured, what the indicators said and why the conclusion is confident.
Repair, Replacement or Upgrade
A few board faults are repairable — a dry joint, a corroded terminal, a replacement relay — and where a reliable repair is realistic we will offer it. More often, replacement is right: boards are generally replaced rather than component-level repaired, because reliability matters in something that controls a heavy machine. Replacement is quoted separately, matched to your operator, and we confirm compatibility before ordering anything. For older systems where the original board is discontinued, a modern universal board is often the sensible path, and we will explain what changes with it, including how your existing remotes and safety devices connect.
Safety Is Not Negotiable
The control board is where force limits and obstruction detection live, so board work is where bypassing happens — and it must not. Photocells, safety edges and force limits are never disabled, taped over or programmed out to make a replacement board easier to fit. After any board work we test the safety devices with a real obstruction test and set forces to the manufacturer's specification, then put the gate through full cycles from every control method.
Settings Worth Preserving
A board swap can quietly erase things you rely on: auto-close timers, partial opening for pedestrian access, remote codes, keypad codes and intercom integration. We record your current settings before any replacement and restore them afterwards, and we will walk you through anything that has changed, such as re-pairing remotes to a new receiver.
When to Call Us
Book a visit when multiple functions misbehave at once, when the panel shows fault codes you cannot interpret, when settings vanish after power cuts, or after any storm or supply event that coincided with the gate changing behaviour. Tell us the make and model of the operator and any code or indicator pattern you can see or photograph.
Booking Your Visit
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before we start, and the board itself is quoted separately. Same-day visits may be available depending on the day.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
The control board is the brain of your gate system, and when it misbehaves the symptoms can look like motor, remote or sensor faults. Our visit establishes whether the board is genuinely at fault or being blamed unfairly — because replacing a healthy board is an expensive way to fix nothing.

Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about control board failure
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I inspect or reset the control board myself?
Looking at the display and photographing any fault codes or indicator flashes is genuinely useful and completely safe. Opening the panel, probing connections or resetting the board is not — boards carry mains sections and control heavy machinery. Send us the photos when you book and diagnosis starts faster.
How do you know it is the board and not something else?
We test the supply, motor, wiring, photocells, safety edges, remotes and battery backup first, and only diagnose the board when everything connected to it is proven healthy. If the board is faulty we will show you the evidence — measured values and indicator codes — rather than asking you to take it on trust.
Is it ever better to repair the board than replace it?
Sometimes a repair is realistic — a corroded terminal or a single failed relay — and we will offer it where reliability allows. More often replacement is the honest answer, because boards controlling heavy moving machinery need to be dependable. We set out both options with costs before anything is decided.
Will replacing the board lose my settings and remotes?
Settings can be lost on a board swap, so we record everything beforehand — timers, partial opening, remote and keypad codes — and restore it afterwards. Remotes usually need re-pairing to the new board or receiver, which we do as part of the job and walk you through.
How much does control board diagnosis and replacement cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book. Labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts. The control board itself is quoted separately as a part, including any options if your model is discontinued.
