When a smoke detector stops working, the temptation is to take the battery out to stop the chirping and deal with it later. We would ask you not to — a home without a working smoke alarm is the one place in this whole category where an unresolved fault can genuinely cost lives. The good news is that most smoke alarm faults are findable and fixable: a battery at the end of its life, a failed mains connection, dust contamination, or simply an alarm that has passed its designed lifespan. Our visit diagnoses which applies to yours and puts it right, with your approval at every step.
Why smoke alarms fail
Smoke alarms fall into two broad camps, and the fault patterns differ. Battery-only alarms most often fail through a dead or ageing battery — which usually announces itself as intermittent chirping — or through dust and insects blocking the sensing chamber, which stops detection long before the test button stops working. Mains-powered alarms, standard in most modern homes and usually interconnected, can fail through a tripped circuit, a damaged or disconnected supply, or a failed rechargeable backup battery, which is why a mains alarm may seem dead even though the power is on elsewhere. Age is the quietest cause of all: smoke alarms have a designed lifespan, typically around ten years, after which the sensing chamber degrades and the unit cannot be trusted regardless of how it tests. An alarm past its date stamp needs replacement, not repair.
How we diagnose it
We start by identifying exactly what you have: battery, mains or mains-with-backup, and whether the alarms are interconnected so that one triggers all. Then we test methodically — the test button, the supply and backup battery on mains units, the battery and sensing chamber on battery units, and the interconnection between alarms. We look for the causes that stop detection silently: dust, paint, insect contamination and age. The date stamp on the unit matters as much as anything we test, and we will tell you plainly if an alarm is simply too old to keep. By the end you will know whether the answer is a battery, a reconnection, a clean, or a replacement unit.
What we can and cannot do
Battery replacement and basic cleaning on a battery alarm are user-serviceable, and we are happy to fit the correct cells. Work on a mains-connected alarm — checking its supply, its interconnect wiring or its backup battery — is engineer work, done with the circuit safely isolated. Replacement alarms are matched to what you have: mains alarms need the correct type for your wiring and interconnection, and we quote parts separately so you can see the cost before approving. What we will not do is leave you with a disabled alarm while a part is ordered, advise you to cover a chirping alarm with tape, or claim any alarm will detect fire in every circumstance — no detector can promise that, which is exactly why faults need fixing promptly.
Between visits
Press the test button monthly; it confirms the sounder and electronics, not the smoke sensing, so it is a habit rather than a guarantee. Keep alarms free of dust and paint, never remove a battery to silence nuisance chirping, and treat any alarm sounding in a real fire as real: get everyone out and call 999. If your alarm fails its test repeatedly, book a diagnosis rather than working around it.
Booking a smoke alarm visit
Call or use the website and tell us whether your alarms are battery or mains, what the fault looks like — silent, chirping, failing the test — and how old the alarms are if you can see the date stamp. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any replacement alarms quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A smoke alarm that will not sound, chirps constantly or fails its test button is not a nuisance job — it is the device your household depends on at its most vulnerable moment. We treat it accordingly: a careful diagnosis, honest advice about age and replacement, and a working alarm before we leave.

Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about smoke detector not working
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I fix a smoke detector myself?
Replacing the battery in a battery-only alarm, or the backup cell in a mains alarm where the manual describes it, is sensible DIY — and monthly test-button checks are your job too. But if a mains alarm is dead with power on, or an alarm fails testing repeatedly, do not open the unit or disable it; book a diagnosis.
What do you check on the visit?
We test the alarm and any interconnected others, check the mains supply and backup battery or the primary battery, inspect for dust, paint and contamination in the sensing chamber, and check the unit's age against its date stamp. Then we explain the cause and quote before any work.
Is it safe to disconnect a faulty smoke alarm?
No — a disconnected alarm leaves you unprotected, and fires do not wait for convenient repairs. If an alarm is chirping or faulty, tell us and we will prioritise diagnosis. If an alarm sounds and you smell smoke or suspect a real fire, get everyone out and call 999 first, and deal with the sensor afterwards.
How often should smoke alarms be replaced?
Most manufacturers design smoke alarms for around ten years of service, after which the sensing chamber degrades — the date stamp on the base tells you. A unit past its date cannot be repaired back to reliability. We will check the age of your alarms and say plainly when replacement, not repair, is the right answer.
How is smoke alarm work priced?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, and any replacement alarms or batteries are quoted separately so you know exactly what you are approving.
