Installing sensors looks simple — stick or screw a small device to a wall or frame and connect it. What separates an installation that lasts from one that generates call-outs for years is everything around that moment: choosing the right type of sensor for each position, mounting it at the right height and angle, fixing it to a surface that will hold it, and testing that it actually covers what it is meant to cover. Position affects performance more than any other single factor, and we will be honest with you about that throughout — including when a position you want is one that cannot work well.

Choosing the right sensor for each place

Different openings and rooms need different detection. Contact sensors — a switch and magnet pair — suit doors and windows, with the type and mounting varying by frame material and how the door or window moves. Passive infrared motion sensors suit rooms and circulation spaces, with coverage patterns, pet tolerance and mounting height all mattering; a sensor chosen for a hallway is not automatically right for a lounge with a cat. Glass-break detectors listen for the specific sound of breaking glass and belong where they can hear the windows they are meant to watch. Heat alarms belong over cookers and in garages, where smoke alarms would nuisance-trigger. Positioning has hard rules worth respecting: motion sensors work best facing across the likely path of movement rather than along it, away from windows, heat sources and draughts; contacts need their magnet within the manufacturer's specified gap; and every sensor needs a surface and fixing that will keep it exactly where it is put through years of door slams, decorating and family life.

How we install

We start with a survey of the home and the system it is joining: what panel or hub you have, what it accepts, where coverage is needed, and where the realistic mounting positions are. We discuss the plan with you before drilling anything — including which positions we would avoid and why, such as a motion sensor that would face a sunny window or a contact on a frame that cannot close true. Installation itself is done with fixings suited to the material: proper plugs and screws in masonry, the right approach on uPVC, and honest advice where a surface will not hold a sensor reliably. Wireless sensors are paired properly to the hub or panel, positioned with attention to range and obstructions, and batteries are fresh, not leftovers. Wired sensors are connected with the system safely isolated. Then we test every sensor with you — walk tests, door and window openings — until coverage is proven rather than assumed.

Limits and honest advice

No sensor detects everything in every condition, and we will say so: a motion sensor has a coverage pattern, a contact only watches its own opening, and a pet or a sunlit conservatory will challenge any hardware. If a position you have in mind cannot work well, we will say so and offer the realistic alternative rather than fit it and let you discover the limits later. Where installation is part of a larger project — a whole new system, for example — that is quoted after a survey, with parts quoted separately and the full cost approved before work starts.

Booking an installation

Call or use the website and tell us what you want protected, what system the sensors will join, and anything about the home that affects placement — pets, sun exposure, upcoming decorating. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any sensors and parts quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A sensor fitted in the wrong place will disappoint you forever, no matter how good the hardware. Installation is where most detection problems are created or prevented, so we take it seriously: a proper look at your home, honest advice on what belongs where, and a tested result rather than a box emptied.

What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service

5 out of 5 from 7 reviews

Would use again

Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Job: CCTV Installation

Second time we have used them

I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.

Job: Backup Battery Fault

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Alarm Repair Service

Questions people ask about sensor installation

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I install sensors myself?

Many wireless sensors are designed for self-installation, and the manuals are honest about how — so yes, if you are confident, it is reasonable DIY. The parts people get wrong are placement and testing: height, angle, facing direction, gap tolerances and a proper verification test. If you want placement advice and testing done properly, that is a good use of a visit.

How do you decide where sensors go?

We survey the home and match sensor type to each position: contacts on doors and windows, motion sensors with appropriate patterns and heights for rooms, glass-break detectors where they can hear their windows, heat alarms over cookers. We discuss the plan with you first, including positions we would avoid and why, before fixing anything.

Is there anything you will not fit or do?

We will not fit a sensor where we believe it cannot perform — facing direct sunlight, over a heat source, on a surface that will not hold it — and we will tell you that plainly rather than take the work. We also match sensors to the panel or hub they join, since incompatible equipment rarely ends well.

Will my pets set off the new motion sensors?

It depends on the sensor type, its height and angle, and how your pets move through the space — no sensor is completely pet-proof and we will not claim otherwise. Pet-tolerant designs and careful positioning handle most households well. We will discuss your pets during the survey and test the placement with them in mind.

How is sensor installation priced?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, and any sensors, fixings and parts are quoted separately. Larger installations are quoted after a survey.
