Alignment is the quiet fault of the sensor world. Nothing looks broken: the sensor is still on the wall, its light still blinks, the battery is fine — yet it misses the door it should cover, reads a window as open, or keeps losing the edge of a room it used to watch. In most cases the sensor or its magnet has simply moved relative to where it needs to be, by millimetres or by degrees. Doors drop, window sashes settle, brackets loosen, decorators lean ladders against walls, and children's footballs find corners. Once the geometry is wrong, the sensor cannot do its job no matter how healthy its electronics are, which is why replacement is usually the wrong first response.
How sensors drift out of alignment
Contact sensors are the most alignment-sensitive of all: a magnet and a switch must sit within a small distance of each other for the panel to read the door or window as closed. A door that has dropped by even a few millimetres, a swollen frame in damp weather, or a sensor body pushed slightly along its tape or bracket can widen that gap past the limit, producing faults like a zone stuck open or an alarm that will not set. Motion sensors are the other kind: their detection is a shaped pattern, and if the unit is tilted, rotated or shifted, the pattern moves with it — so a sensor that once covered the staircase now watches a bookshelf. Wireless sensors also have a radio dimension: turning a sensor so its antenna is poorly oriented, or mounting it against metal, can weaken its signal enough to cause intermittent faults that look like alignment problems.
How we assess alignment
We start from the panel, not the sensor: what does the system actually report when the door opens, the room is walked, or the zone is tested? Then we look at the physical relationship — the gap and position between magnet and sensor, or the height, angle and direction of a motion sensor against the coverage it was chosen for. We check how the sensor is fixed, because an alignment fix on a loose or crumbling mount will not hold, and we note anything structural that is causing the drift, such as a dropped door or a warping window. Where possible we use the manufacturer's own alignment aids and test the zone repeatedly at the end, because a fixed-once-and-hoped approach is how alignment faults come back.
Correcting it properly
Re-aligning usually means re-fixing the sensor or its magnet in the right position with fixings suited to the surface — uPVC, timber and masonry all need different treatment — or adding a spacer where a door or window cannot close fully. For motion sensors it means setting height, angle and direction deliberately, then walk-testing the actual pattern rather than trusting the bracket's markings. Where the drift has a cause we can fix, such as a loose hinge or a swollen frame, we will tell you honestly whether that needs attention too, because correcting the sensor alone is a repair that will not last if the geometry keeps changing.
What we will not do
We will not bodge an alignment with tape, folded card or improvised spacers as a permanent fix — those hide the fault and fail quietly. And we will not claim any alignment suits every door, window or room; some openings genuinely need a different sensor type, and we would rather quote the right one than re-bend the wrong one. Any replacement parts are quoted separately, and the full cost is agreed before work begins.
Booking an alignment check
Get in touch by phone or the website and tell us the sensor's location, what the panel reports, and anything that has happened nearby — a door repaired, a window replaced, decorating done. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any parts quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Sensors do not have to break to stop working properly — a knock, a warped frame or a bracket that has crept out of position is enough. Because the fault is invisible, it is often misdiagnosed as a broken unit. We measure, adjust and test, so your sensor protects what it was installed to protect.
What our customers say about our Security & CCTV service
5 out of 5 from 7 reviews
Would use again
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.
Job: CCTV Installation
Second time we have used them
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Backup Battery Fault
Exactly what was quoted
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 56 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about sensor misalignment
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I realign a sensor myself?
If the sensor's manual explains it and you are confident, nudging a magnet back within range or re-seating a sensor on its bracket is reasonable DIY — then run a walk test or zone test to confirm. If the panel still misbehaves, or the fix needs drilling and re-fixing, a proper diagnosis is worth the call.
What do you check during an alignment visit?
We test what the panel actually reports, measure the gap between magnet and sensor or the aim of a motion sensor, check the mounting and fixings, look for the underlying cause of the drift, and re-test the zone thoroughly once corrected. You get the diagnosis in plain words before any quote.
Is a misaligned sensor a safety issue?
It is not dangerous, but it is a protection issue: a contact that reads a door as closed when it is not, or a motion sensor watching the wrong half of a room, leaves a blind spot you may be relying on. We never bypass a misaligned zone — we correct the alignment so the zone is genuinely monitored.
Why does my alarm complain about a door only in winter?
Seasonal faults usually mean the alignment is right on the limit: a frame that swells in damp weather or a door that moves with temperature shifts the gap enough to fail only part of the year. We measure the gap across its worst condition and set the alignment with that margin in mind.
How much will realigning a sensor cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need us to attend. Once we have diagnosed the alignment, the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, and any parts, such as a replacement bracket or magnet, are quoted separately.
