What causes the bang
Water hammer is a pressure shock, not a ghost. When a valve closes quickly, the moving column of water stops and its momentum produces a pressure spike that travels back along the pipe until something absorbs it. In a house, that something is usually a pipe that is free to move, so you hear a bang or a series of knocks. The common causes are a worn tap washer or jumper that lets the valve slam rather than close smoothly, a float valve in a toilet cistern or cold water tank closing too fast, loose or unclipped pipework that can shift, high incoming mains pressure, and appliances with fast-closing solenoid valves such as washing machines and dishwashers.
Why it is worth taking seriously
Noisy pipes banging when a tap closes are tempting to ignore. It is not entirely harmless. Every shock puts stress on joints, washers and valve seats, so the fittings that cause the noise also wear faster because of it. On older pipework, repeated shock can loosen a compression joint or crack a solder joint at a bend. It also disturbs sleep and makes a house feel poorly maintained. Crucially, the cause is diagnosable: quietening the symptom without finding the source usually means it returns.
How we diagnose it
We ask when the noise happens — one tap, all taps, only the washing machine, only the toilet refilling, or only when the shower is turned off. That narrows it quickly. We then test each outlet in turn and listen at the pipe run to locate where the movement is. We check the incoming pressure with a gauge, inspect tap and float valves for wear, and look at how the pipework is supported, particularly where it passes through joists or runs along a wall. If pressure is high, we check whether a pressure-reducing valve is fitted and working.
How we fix it
The repair is matched to the cause. Worn tap washers and jumpers are replaced so valves close progressively. Cistern and tank float valves are adjusted or renewed so they shut without slamming. Loose pipe runs are re-clipped and, where they pass through openings, sleeved and packed so they cannot knock against structure. Where mains pressure is genuinely high, we fit or replace a pressure-reducing valve set to a sensible level. Where the layout makes a shock unavoidable — typically a long run to a fast-closing appliance valve — we fit a water hammer arrestor close to the appliance. After the work we operate every valve in the house and listen, rather than testing one tap and calling it done.
Keeping it quiet
Once the system is sorted, a little maintenance keeps it that way. Replace dripping tap washers promptly instead of waiting for them to fail completely, since a worn washer is often the start of the slam. If you have a pressure-reducing valve, have it checked periodically. When new appliances are installed, ask for an arrestor if the run is long. And if you notice a new knock after building work, mention it early — a pipe that has been moved and not re-clipped is a quick fix before it becomes a worn joint.
When to call us
Call if the banging is new, if it has got louder, if it happens when nothing has been turned on, or if it is accompanied by a leak, a pressure drop or water appearing where it should not. A single soft thud when the washing machine finishes is worth mentioning at the next visit; a repeated hammer that shakes the wall is worth fixing now.
Book a call-out
Note down which outlet or appliance triggers the noise and whether it happens on both hot and cold, and we will arrive with the likely parts rather than making a second trip.

You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A single loud thud when a tap, washing machine or dishwasher valve closes is water hammer: the column of moving water stops abruptly and the shock has nowhere to go. It is often traced to a worn washer, a loose pipe run, high incoming pressure or a missing arrestor. We find the cause, quieten the system and check for damage.

Questions people ask about water hammer fix
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is water hammer dangerous?
It is not usually immediately dangerous, but it is not harmless either. Each shock stresses joints, washers and valve seats, and repeated shock can loosen a compression joint or crack a soldered bend. Fixing it protects the pipework and stops the noise getting worse.
Why does it only happen when the washing machine or dishwasher finishes?
Appliances use fast-closing solenoid valves, which stop the flow almost instantly and send a shock back down the pipe. That is why the noise is often worst at the end of a cycle, and why a water hammer arrestor fitted close to the appliance is usually the right fix.
Can high water pressure cause banging pipes?
Yes. Higher pressure means a bigger shock when a valve shuts, and it also makes valves close more sharply. We measure the incoming pressure with a gauge; if it is excessive, fitting or adjusting a pressure-reducing valve usually quietens the system and is kinder to your fittings.
Will new taps stop the noise?
Sometimes, if worn washers or a slamming jumper are the cause, because modern cartridges close more progressively. But if the real cause is loose pipework or high pressure, new taps will not help and may make it worse. That is why we diagnose before recommending parts.
How is the work priced?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
