A roof is a water-shedding system, and it only works while every part of the drainage path is clear: water runs off the covering, collects in valleys and gutters, and leaves through downpipes and outlets. Block a stage anywhere in that chain and water backs up — under tile laps at the eaves, over valley edges into the roof space, or into standing pools on a flat roof. Blocked roof drainage is one of the most common causes of the leaks we are called to, and one of the most preventable.

Where roofs block up

Gutters collect moss washed off the covering, leaves, tile grit, seeds and general deposit — and a gutter is only as good as its last clear. Valleys concentrate large volumes of water into a narrow channel, so even modest debris dams water back over their edges. Flat roof outlets and overflows block with debris and moss, leaving standing water with nowhere to go. Downpipes silt up at bends and joints. Bird nests, balls and wind-blown debris add their own surprises. And the blockage you find is often not the only one — we check the whole run, because clearing one choke point just moves the overflow to the next.

How we diagnose and clear

We work through the drainage path: gutters and their falls and joints, downpipes from top to bottom, valley channels, flat roof outlets and overflows, and the roof covering above — because moss build-up on tiles is the source of much of the debris and is worth mentioning for later. We clear blockages by hand and with appropriate tools, flush through to confirm water leaves the roof properly, and check whether the overflow has already been wetting the underlay or timbers — water backing up at the eaves is the quiet damage worth catching. Access is by ladder and appropriate equipment; we will not improvise unsafe access, and we will say plainly if a section needs different access arrangements.

Prevention that actually helps

A clean today is worth more with a plan for tomorrow. We will tell you what is generating the debris — a mossy roof, overhanging trees, a failing gutter that traps silt — and what periodic attention would prevent the next blockage. Gutter guards are sometimes suggested; we will give you an honest view of whether they would help your roof or simply move the maintenance elsewhere. No drainage system stays clear forever, but a roof whose paths are checked seasonally rarely backs water up into a ceiling.

What blockages do when ignored

Backed-up water at the eaves soaks underlay and timbers, rots fascias, and eventually shows indoors as staining or drips. On flat roofs, standing water shortens the membrane's life and finds every weakness. Overflowing edges soak walls and feed damp. All of these cost far more to fix than the clearing visit that prevents them.

Aftercare

Watch the next heavy rain after clearing — water should flow cleanly to the downpipes with no overflow at edges or joints. Book seasonal clears if your roof is mossy or sits under trees, particularly in autumn. And if water ever stands on the roof or spills at the edge again, tell us early.

Booking your visit

Call Maintenance Men or book through maintenance-men.com. Say where you have noticed the blockage or overflow, when it worsens, and whether anything has dripped indoors. Photos help. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any parts quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Roofs shed water through valleys, gutters and outlets — and when any of those block, water backs up under tiles or stands on flat roofs until it finds a way in. Our visit clears the blockages, works out why they formed, and leaves the roof draining the way it was designed to.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about blocked roof drainage

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I clear blocked roof drainage myself?

Clearing an accessible ground-floor gutter from a secure ladder with someone footing it is reasonable DIY. But valleys, high-level runs, flat roof outlets and anything above a first floor involve real fall risk, and blockages often hide more than one choke point. If water has been backing up into the roof, a diagnosis is worth more than another clear.

What do you check when roof drainage is blocked?

The full drainage path — gutters, downpipes, joints and bends, valley channels, flat roof outlets and overflows — plus the roof covering above, since moss and debris from the tiles are usually the source. We also check whether backed-up water has been wetting the underlay or timbers, which is the damage that matters.

Why does the blockage keep coming back?

Something is feeding it — commonly moss washing down from the roof covering, overhanging trees, or a gutter with poor falls that traps silt instead of shedding it. We identify the source and will suggest honest options, from seasonal clearing to addressing the moss, rather than just clearing the same spot repeatedly.

Do gutter guards stop blockages?

Sometimes they help, sometimes they move the problem — guards can trap fine debris on top and create a different blockage, or be impossible to maintain properly. We give you an honest assessment for your specific roof rather than selling a generic fix, including whether simple seasonal clearing is the better answer.

How much does clearing blocked roof drainage cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved before work starts, so you approve it before any tools come out, with parts quoted separately.
