Hedges grow faster than people expect. A laurel or leylandii left for two seasons can go from neat to enormous, and by then a light trim is no longer on the menu — the hedge needs reducing, and that needs the right tools, the right timing and a bit of knowledge about what each species will tolerate. This visit exists to bring an overgrown hedge back to a size you can live with, safely and legally.
What we assess first
Species matters enormously. Leylandii and most conifers will not regrow from old brown wood, so they can only be cut back to green growth — cut into the dead interior and the bald patch stays bald for good, sometimes permanently. Beech, hawthorn, holly and many native hedges regenerate well and can be cut back hard. Laurel responds to hard pruning but looks ragged for a season. We also check the hedge's condition — gaps, dead sections, lean, damage at the base — because a hedge that is failing may be better replaced than resurrected, and we will say so honestly.
Birds and the law
Between roughly March and August, hedges are prime nesting real estate, and it is against the law to disturb an active nest. Before any cutting we check the hedge properly for nesting birds; if we find one, that section stays untouched until the young have fledged, and we either work around it or reschedule. This is not a technicality we wave through — it is a normal part of the job, and it is why we would rather book your hedge for February than promise to slash through a hedge in June.
Very tall hedges and permissions
If your hedge is very tall — several metres of leylandii, say — a few things apply. High hedge work means working at height, often from ladders or platforms, and it is a bigger, slower job that is priced accordingly. There is also the legal side: high hedges that block light are covered by anti-social behaviour legislation, and if the hedge sits on a boundary, cutting rights and responsibility depend on who owns it — that is a matter between you and your neighbour or the council, and we will tell you plainly that resolving ownership and any complaints procedure is the customer's responsibility, not something we can promise or advise on with certainty. What we can do is cut the hedge you are entitled to cut, from the side you have access to, safely.
The work itself
Reduction is usually done in stages and to a taper — slightly wider at the base than the top, so light reaches the lower growth and the hedge stays thick to the ground. We cut to the agreed height and face, clear the clippings as we go, and rake out the dead leaves and debris that build up at the base and invite weeds and rot. Where a hedge needs cutting back beyond what it can survive in one go, we will stagger the work across seasons rather than butcher it — a hedge reduced sensibly over two winters looks better and lives longer than one scalped to the trunk in an afternoon.
Aftercare
A hard-reduced hedge needs a little follow-up: water in dry spells for the first season, a feed in spring, and then regular light trims rather than heroic ones — annual or twice-yearly trimming keeps a hedge dense and easy to cut. We will tell you when your particular species wants its trim, because beech, laurel and flowering hedges all have their own calendars.
How to book
Book by phone or website and tell us the hedge type if you know it, its approximate length and height, and which sides need cutting. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with waste removal agreed in advance.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A hedge that has been left for a few years does not just look untidy — it eats light from the garden, leans over paths and becomes a home for wildlife before anyone notices. Cutting it back properly is a job with real rules to it: the right time of year, the right cut for the species, and a careful eye out for birds nesting inside. We take all of that seriously.
What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about overgrown hedges
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Could I cut my own overgrown hedge back?
For a low, reachable hedge, yes — a good trimmer and a patient weekend will do it. Very tall hedges are different: they need ladders or platforms, heavy cutting gear and an awareness of what the species will tolerate, which is where most DIY attempts end with a bald leylandii or a trip to hospital. Working at height on a ladder with a cutter is genuinely dangerous work.
What do you check before cutting a hedge?
Species first, because that decides how hard it can be cut and when; then height, condition, gaps and lean; then a careful check for nesting birds in the season. We also look at access — where ladders and cuttings will go — and agree with you exactly how far back the hedge should come before we start.
What if there are birds nesting in the hedge?
Then that section is left alone until the birds have fledged, full stop — nesting birds are protected by law. We either cut the rest of the hedge and leave that part, or reschedule the whole job. It is one of the main reasons we recommend trimming outside the main nesting season.
My neighbour's side of the hedge is overgrown too — will you cut it?
Only with the owner's agreement, since cutting rights follow ownership of the hedge or the land. Boundary responsibility is a matter between neighbours, and if there is a dispute it is not something we can resolve or advise on with certainty. What we can do is cut your side properly and leave your neighbour's face alone unless they are happy for us to do it.
How much does it cost to reduce an overgrown hedge?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before we start — very tall hedges take longer, so the quote reflects the real height and access — and any waste removal is agreed and priced in advance.
