Alignment is everything with a gate. A gate that is true swings freely, latches first time and wears its hardware slowly; a gate that is out of alignment fights its hinges, chews its latch and trains the whole household into the lift-and-shove ritual. Realignment is about finding what moved and correcting it at the cause.

What Knocks a Gate Out of Alignment

Dropped hinges come first — screws working loose in softened timber, or hinge pins wearing under daily load, let the latch side sink. Racked frames: a gate whose diagonal bracing has loosened twists out of square, so the latch presents at an angle that no longer engages. Moved posts: a gate post rocking in soft ground re-writes the geometry of the whole opening. And timber movement — a gate that swells in wet weather and shrinks in dry changes its own clearances, which is why some gates only misbehave seasonally. Vehicle strikes and heavy winds add their share.

How We Assess Alignment

We watch the gate swing and see exactly where it goes wrong — at the start of the arc, partway, or at the latch. We test the hardware with the gate open to separate hardware faults from alignment faults, check the hinges and their fixings, offer a square to the frame, and check the posts for movement at ground level. The diagnosis matters because the fixes differ: realigning a latch on a dropped gate treats a symptom, and the drop continues. You get a plain explanation of what has moved, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with parts quoted separately from labour.

The Realignment Work

Dropped hinges are re-seated or re-positioned, with fixings properly sized for the load — and if the timber around the originals has softened, that is addressed first, because alignment corrections into soft wood do not hold. A racked frame is squared by tightening or renewing the diagonal brace. Latch and keep are re-aligned to the corrected gate position, so engagement is clean rather than approximate. Posts that have moved are the bigger conversation: a post re-set means digging, and boundary lines commonly carry pipes, cables and drains. We locate carefully and use detectors where appropriate, but no scan guarantees what is below, so we ask for your utilities' plans to be available — that is part of a safe dig approach, and providing them is the customer's responsibility.

When Alignment Has Gone Too Far

There is a point at which realignment becomes renewal: a gate twisted well beyond square, a stile split through where the hinges fix, or a post that has moved too far to re-set economically. We will say so honestly and quote replacement rather than charging you for a realignment that cannot hold. Most gates, though, are far from that point — and come back to true with properly done corrections.

Aftercare

Check hinge fixings each spring and after wet winters, keep the latch oiled, and keep timber treated. If the gate begins drifting again, call early — a quarter-turn of screw slack is a two-minute correction, while months of forcing the latch wears hardware and softens timber around it.

When to Call Us

Call when the gate needs lifting to close, when it swings past or short of the latch, when it scrapes at one point of the arc, or when it only latches in dry weather. Tell us whether the gate is timber or metal and roughly its size when booking.

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before we start, and parts are quoted separately from labour.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

What our customers say about this job

3 out of 5 from 1 reviews

Good work, poor communication

The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Questions people ask about gate realignment

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I realign a gate myself?

Adjusting a keep plate or tightening hinge screws is reasonable DIY and sometimes enough. Beyond that it gets technical quickly — knowing whether the drop is in the hinges, the frame or the post, and correcting into timber that is still sound. If the gate needs lifting into position daily, the alignment problem is usually deeper than the latch, and a diagnosis first saves wasted parts.

What do you check when realigning a gate?

Where in the swing it goes wrong, the hinges and their fixings, whether the frame is still square, the posts for movement, and the latch-to-keep relationship with the gate open. The sequence matters: hardware faults and alignment faults feel similar but need different fixes, and the post causes more of both than anything else.

My gate only misaligns in wet weather — is that normal?

It is common, and it usually points to timber movement rather than failing hardware: the gate swells when wet and changes its own clearances. Easing and treating the timber so it takes on less water usually solves it. We will confirm which it is when we assess, because seasonal movement and true mechanical drop look similar but need different answers.

When does realignment stop being worth it?

When the gate itself is twisted well beyond square, when a stile is split through where the hinges fix, or when a post has moved too far to re-set economically. At that point replacement is the honest answer and we will quote it for your approval. Most gates we see are nowhere near that point, though.

How is gate realignment priced?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, and parts such as hinges, fixings or latch hardware are quoted separately from labour. Nothing begins until you have approved the price.
