Replacing a fence is a bigger decision than repairing one, and it deserves to be made on evidence rather than frustration. Our job is to survey the run honestly, tell you whether replacement really is the right call, and — if it is — build you a fence that outlasts the one that failed.

Repair or Replace?

Replacement is right when the posts along a run have failed or are failing, when rot has spread through most of the timber, or when the old fence was simply built wrong — panels set into the damp ground, posts at inadequate depth, materials past economic repair. It is not right when two panels and a post have failed in an otherwise sound run. We will say which it is plainly, because advising a replacement you do not need is not business we want back. The survey maps every post and panel, so the recommendation is based on the actual state of the boundary.

The Survey: Boundaries, Ground and Services

The survey covers the line and length of the run, ground conditions, access, and what the fence meets along the way. Boundary questions come up here: the exact line, shared obligations and permissions are matters between you and your neighbours — and, where permissions apply, the relevant authorities. That responsibility rests with you, the customer, and we do not promise compliance status; we flag what may need confirming and expect boundary agreements to be settled before work starts. Ground conditions decide post depth and style — clay that moves, ground that waterlogs, slopes that need stepping. And because every new post is a hole in the ground, we locate buried services carefully and use detectors where appropriate, but no scan guarantees what is below. Utilities' plans and a safe dig approach are part of the process, and providing the plans is the customer's responsibility.

Design Decisions Worth Getting Right

A replacement is the chance to improve on what was there: taller panels for privacy, gravel boards to lift timber clear of damp ground, concrete posts where longevity matters more than looks, capping to shed rain off panel tops, and a gate hung properly as part of the run. We will talk through the options honestly against your garden's exposure and your budget. Materials are quoted separately from labour so you can see exactly what each choice costs and make informed decisions.

The Replacement Itself

Old posts come out, new posts go in at proper depth and spacing, and the mix is allowed to cure before panels are hung — no fence should be asked to carry load on uncured posts. Replacement is a quoted project: a fixed price for an agreed scope, approved before work starts. Longer runs are staged over several days, with the boundary made safe at the end of each day so you are never left with an open garden overnight.

Weather and Aftercare

Replacement work needs a sensible weather window — post mix and storms do not mix — and we schedule accordingly, telling you plainly when conditions must delay a stage. Afterwards, treat the timber periodically, keep soil and planting off the bottom edge, and walk the run after the first winter to catch any early movement.

When to Call Us

Call when repair has stopped making sense — when posts are failing along the run, when rot keeps returning, or when you are simply unsure which it is. Tell us the rough length of the run and what has gone wrong with the old fence, and we will take it from there.

You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the replacement project is quoted after the survey, with the full cost approved before work starts and materials quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

Replacing a fence is the moment to fix everything that was wrong with the old one — shallow posts, wrong materials, panels rotting at the bottom. Our visit is a proper survey of the run, leading to a quoted project you approve before we start, staged sensibly if it takes more than a day.

What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service

4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews

Sorted the same day

Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.

Job: Uneven Shed Base

Turned up when they said

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Water-Damaged Patio

Good work, poor communication

Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Job: Sinking Driveway

Questions people ask about fence replacement

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Could I replace a fence myself instead of hiring this done?

A short, level run is achievable for a competent DIYer with help and the right tools. What tips most DIY replacements into trouble is the ground: post depth in soft clay, hard digging near buried services, and slopes that need stepping. If your old fence failed early, it is worth having the survey tell you why before repeating its mistakes.

What does the replacement survey cover?

The condition of every post and panel along the run, the line and length, ground conditions, access for materials and waste, and your aims for the new fence. It also covers boundary and permission matters — those are your responsibility to settle, and we flag what may need confirming rather than promising compliance status.

How do you avoid hitting pipes and cables when setting new posts?

We locate carefully and use detectors where appropriate before any digging, but no scan guarantees what is below, which is why utilities' plans and a safe dig approach matter. Providing those plans is the customer's responsibility. If a planned post position conflicts with a service, we adjust the run rather than dig into the unknown.

Can I keep part of my existing fence?

Often, yes — sound sections can be kept and tied into the new run, and we will say honestly which parts are worth keeping. Where the old fence failed because of a systemic problem such as shallow posts, keeping sections of it can reintroduce the same weakness, and we will explain that trade-off before you decide.

How is a fence replacement priced?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. Replacement is a quoted project: after the survey you receive a full quote for the agreed scope, which you approve before work starts, with materials quoted separately from labour. Multi-day runs are staged with clear pricing throughout.
