Loose decking boards rarely start loose. They loosen because something else has given up: screws have pulled out of soft timber, a joist underneath has rotted or shrunk, the deck frame has moved with the seasons, or nails have worked proud after years of expansion and contraction. Tightening the same screws is often just a temporary silence before the board starts moving again.
Why boards come loose
Moisture is the main driver. Boards swell in wet weather and shrink in dry spells, working their fixings back and forth a fraction at a time. Screws corrode and lose grip in the joist, especially in timber that has stayed damp. If a joist has softened with rot, there is nothing solid left for the fixing to bite into. Movement can also come from below — posts that have shifted, bearers that were undersized, or a frame that was never braced properly.
What we look for
We walk the whole deck and mark every board that moves, then lift or probe the worst ones to inspect the joist beneath. We check fixings for corrosion, look for tell-tale black staining or soft timber that suggests rot, and test the frame itself for racking or movement. Only once we know whether this is a fixing problem, a joist problem or a frame problem do we quote — because the right fix is completely different in each case.
How we fix it
Where timber is sound, we refix boards with good-quality corrosion-resistant screws in new positions, sometimes adding a batten or extra joist so fixings have fresh timber to bite. Where a joist has softened, we will quote to replace that section rather than refix into rot. Where movement is coming from the frame itself, we will explain what we found and quote the frame work separately — screwing boards down over a moving frame is not a repair. Every quote is approved by you before we pick up a drill.
Weather and working conditions
Refixing boards is quick, low-mess work, but we still avoid heavy rain — wet decking is slippery and damp timber will not hold a fixing as well long-term. If the weather turns, we will agree a better day rather than compromise.
What we cannot promise
A refixed deck can still creak slightly in extreme temperature swings, and timber outdoors will keep moving with the weather — no fix stops that entirely. What we do is address the actual cause, use appropriate fixings, and tell you honestly if a section is past refixing and needs replacing instead.
When to call
Deal with movement early. A board that rocks works its fixings loose a little more every week, and the timber around each screw gets chewed up until a simple refix becomes a board replacement. If boards are moving near a step or edge, treat it as urgent.
Prevention worth knowing
Boards loosen fastest where water sits and debris collects, so the cheapest protection is a clean, draining deck. Sweep rather than let leaves rot between boards, keep the gaps open, and deal with any area that stays damp after rain. If you notice the same boards working loose each spring, that is a pattern worth diagnosing rather than repeating — it usually means a soft joist or a frame movement that a proper assessment will find in minutes. Fixing the cause once beats refixing the symptom every year.
How to book
Book via maintenance-men.com or by phone. The booking fee is paid when you book and labour is hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. Let us know the approximate deck size and how many boards seem loose — the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any materials quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A board that rocks underfoot or creaks every time someone walks past gets worse quickly, because movement chews up the fixings and the timber around them. We find the real cause rather than just screwing things down harder, then quote for the fix. Nothing happens until you have approved the cost.
What our customers say about our outdoor & exterior service
4.6 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Sorted the same day
Rang in the morning and they got to us in Wolverhampton by early afternoon. Very clear about what needed doing, what it would cost and what could wait. No pressure to add extras. Exactly the sort of tradesperson you want.
Job: Uneven Shed Base
Turned up when they said
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the previous installer had left the pipework awkward to get to), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Water-Damaged Patio
Good work, poor communication
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.

Questions people ask about loose decking boards
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I just screw the loose boards back down myself?
You can, and sometimes it holds. But if screws keep pulling out or the board still rocks after refixing, the problem is usually the joist or frame beneath, not the fixing. If you do try it, use proper exterior decking screws, not drywall screws, and put them in new positions.
What do you check during the visit?
We test every board for movement, check the fixings for corrosion and grip, and probe the joists under the loose areas for rot or softness. We also test the frame itself, because movement that starts in the frame will keep loosening boards no matter how often they are screwed down.
Could loose boards actually be dangerous?
A board that lifts can catch a toe and send someone flying, especially on steps or near doorways, so we treat accessible routes as a priority. Loose boards also trap water against the joists below, quietly starting the rot that turns a small job into a big one.
Why do my boards loosen every year after winter?
Repeated wet-and-freeze cycles make boards swell and shrink, which works fixings loose bit by bit. If it happens every year, either the fixings are poor, the boards were laid too tight, or a joist underneath is soft. We find out which during the assessment and quote the right fix.
What will it cost to fix?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, and any extra timber, battens or screws are quoted separately as materials.
