Control panels on hoists are sealed units with a handful of inputs — handset, emergency stop, limits, load sensing — and one output to the motor. Most faults can be traced to one side or the other of that boundary.
The Symptoms a Panel Fault Produces
- No response to any input, with the unit powered and the battery charged.
- Indicator lights that do not match the manual, or a display showing an error code.
- Buttons that need pressing twice, or that work only when held at an angle.
- Movement in one direction only, or the wrong direction.
- A unit that runs briefly and then stops, repeatedly.
- A beep pattern with no movement at all.
- Intermittent operation that changes with the weather — a strong hint at moisture.
What Goes Wrong Inside
Control boxes live in bathrooms, and moisture is the enemy: condensation on a cold morning, steam from a shower, a splash on the casing. Water reaches the board, corrodes tracks and causes intermittent faults that are maddening to chase. Heat is the second enemy — a box mounted close to a hot pipe or in a sunny conservatory will age faster. Beyond environment, the usual failures are relays that wear out and stop switching cleanly, capacitors that dry out, connectors that work loose, and buttons whose membranes crack. A panel can also be perfectly healthy while a fault elsewhere — a limit switch, a load sensor, a handset cable — makes it appear faulty.
How We Test the Panel
We first establish what the unit is telling us: indicator states, beep patterns, error codes, checked against the manufacturer's documentation rather than guessed at. We test the supply and battery voltage at the box, confirm the emergency stop circuit is closed, and test each input in turn — handset, limits, load sensing — so we know which one is not arriving. Then we test the outputs to the motor. If the inputs are sound and the output is missing, the box is the fault. If an input is missing, the box is innocent and we follow that circuit instead.
Repair or Replace
Where the fault is a connector, a fuse, a seal or a single replaceable component the manufacturer supports, we repair. Where the board has failed, water-damaged boards are usually replaced rather than repaired, because corrosion continues under the conformal coating and a repaired board fails again. We use manufacturer-approved control boxes, check availability before promising, and will tell you if a replacement box costs more than the hoist is worth — sometimes the honest answer is that the unit has reached the end of its life.
Protection Against the Next One
We reseal the enclosure properly, re-route cables so they do not hold water against the box, and advise on ventilation and siting if the room is steamy. A box mounted where steam collects will fail again whatever we fit, and we would rather say so than take the work twice.
Safety and Scope
A control box contains mains voltages and capacitors that hold charge after isolation. Please do not open it, spray cleaner into it, or dry it out with a hairdryer and put it back into service — water damage rarely announces itself, and a board that works today can fail with someone in the sling. If the unit behaves unpredictably, stop using it. If someone is suspended and the panel is dead, keep them comfortable, call 999 if they are in pain or distress, and use emergency lowering only as the manufacturer's instructions describe.
Aftercare
We test every function after replacement, check the emergency stop and lowering, confirm the panel's indicators behave as documented, and leave you knowing what the normal display looks like so an error is noticed early.
Booking
Tell us the make and model, what the panel shows or beeps, which functions fail, and whether the fault changes with the weather. You pay a booking fee when you book, labour is hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

£25 booking fee
then £85 per hour of labour
Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.
Booked within 48 hours
£100 booking fee
then £65 per hour of labour
For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.
Same-day call-out
£220 booking fee
then £45 per hour of labour
Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
The control box is where every command and every safety circuit meets, so a fault there can look like almost anything: a hoist that will not start, one that runs in the wrong direction, a panel that beeps without explanation, or buttons that need pressing twice. Because so much passes through it, testing the box properly is what stops us replacing the wrong part.
What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service
4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews
Proper job, no upselling
Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.
Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes
Fine in the end
The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.
Job: Stair Lift Service
Would use again
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Questions people ask about control panel fault
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I open the control box and dry it out?
No. It holds mains voltage and charged capacitors even after being switched off, and drying a water-damaged board rarely fixes the corrosion underneath. A box that has had water in it needs inspecting and usually replacing. Please leave the casing closed.
What will you test?
We read the indicators, beeps or error codes against the manufacturer's documentation, test the supply and battery voltage at the box, test each input — handset, limits, load sensing, emergency stop — and then the output to the motor. That tells us whether the panel has failed or something feeding it has.
Will a new control box fix it?
Only if the box is actually at fault. A large share of apparent panel faults turn out to be a handset cable, a limit switch or a load sensor, and replacing the box would have been an expensive guess. We test before we quote.
The panel only misbehaves in damp weather. Should I worry?
Yes — that pattern usually means moisture is reaching the board, and it will progress from occasional to permanent. It is also the kind of fault that stops a lift without warning, so please take the hoist out of service and have it checked.
What does it cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted and approved before we start, with any control box or component quoted separately.
