A careful assessment helps identify a practical rail solution without guessing at the strength of the wall or the needs of the person using it.

Following the stair route

We look at the whole flight rather than only the first visible section. Changes in direction, landings, doorways, narrow passages and trim can affect where a handrail can run and how it ends. We discuss the rail's practical route and the available grip space, including whether a return or end detail is possible without creating an obstruction. If the request involves a particular user or a fall-prevention plan, we can assess the building but do not offer clinical advice or promise that a rail prevents falls. Use an occupational therapist's advice for individual positioning needs.

Wall, brackets and continuity

The wall may vary along a single staircase: plaster over masonry, a hollow partition, a timber string or repaired sections can each call for a different approach. We assess likely bracket locations and avoid assuming that a visible finish is structural. Bracket spacing and a continuous, usable line depend on rail design and the material available. Where the wall cannot take the intended load, we can discuss a suitable alternative such as sound timber or another location, if the building allows it. Major carpentry, structural alteration or a second-side installation may need a separate survey and quote.

Access and coordination

Please tell us how many flights and landings are involved, whether the stairs turn, and whether the rail is for one side or both. Mention loose plaster, previous holes or a recent renovation. Keep the stairs clear during the visit and plan another route while the work is underway. If decorating or other trades are planned, tell us so that the fitting sequence can be coordinated; a rail fitted over unfinished or unsound surfaces may need rework. We can explain the maintenance scope, but we do not certify stairs or the property against a building standard.

How we assess and plan

The visit starts with a conversation about how the rail will be used, the route a person takes and the point where support is needed. We look at the wall, its condition and construction, available fixing positions, nearby fittings and any likely obstructions. A solid-looking surface is not proof of a suitable fixing point: plasterboard, hollow partitions, loose plaster, weak masonry and hidden services each change what is safe to attach. We discuss what the wall can support and whether a different position or method is needed.

Fixing, approval and aftercare

We explain the proposed rail, fixings, position and limits before work begins. The fixing is only as strong as the wall behind it; if the substrate and fixing arrangement cannot safely take the intended load, we will not simply fit the rail there. We may discuss another location or suitable backing, or explain that a different trade or more substantial project is needed. Any additional work is quoted separately. Once you approve the full cost, we install to the agreed scope, then check attachment and finish. We explain how to look for movement and ask you not to use the rail if it loosens, cracks or shifts. The booking fee is paid when booking; hourly labour depends on how soon you need the visit. Parts are quoted separately, and no work starts until the full cost is approved.

Booking and practical limits

When arranging the visit, tell us the property type, where the rail is wanted, what the wall is made of if known, and whether it is a new fitting or part of another project. Photos can help us understand access and visible damage, but they cannot confirm what is inside a wall. Keep the area clear and point out pipes, cables, concealed services or previous repairs you know about. We do not make medical or clinical judgements about the right equipment or position; an occupational therapist's advice is the user's resource. We can assess building conditions and explain practical options, but a larger backing or building alteration may need a separate survey and quote.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A handrail should follow the route naturally and be fixed into material that can take the load. We check the stair layout, landings and available fixing points, then explain any limits or alternatives before work starts.

What our customers say about our mobility & accessibility service

4.5 out of 5 from 8 reviews

Proper job, no upselling

Turned up in the window they promised, walked me through the options (turns out the old fitting was seized and needed careful removal), then cracked on. Everything was tested before they left. No mess, no drama, no surprise on the bill.

Job: Loose or Faulty Brakes

Fine in the end

The problem is fixed, which is the main thing, and the engineer clearly knew what they were doing. It took a fair bit longer than the estimate on the phone and I had to ask twice for a breakdown of the hours.

Job: Stair Lift Service

Would use again

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 70 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Control Panel Fault

Questions people ask about handrail installation

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I install a stair handrail myself?

Only do so if the rail and fixings' instructions suit your wall and you can identify sound fixing points. If the wall is hollow, damaged or uncertain, arrange an assessment rather than relying on plugs in plaster.

How do you plan the installation?

We review the stair route, bracket locations, wall construction and obstacles, then agree a practical layout and quote before fitting. Hidden conditions can affect the final scope.

Do you guarantee the handrail will prevent falls?

No. A handrail is a building fitting and cannot eliminate fall risk or replace individual advice. We assess the fixing and installation, not medical suitability.

Can you fit a rail on a turning staircase?

We can assess stairs with landings or turns and discuss how the rail might continue around the route. The wall and available fixing points determine what can safely be installed.

How is the price worked out?

A booking fee is paid when booking. The hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit; the full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with parts quoted separately.
