A replacement thermostat should solve an identified control problem and suit the wiring already in place. We diagnose the fault first, check the replacement against the heating controls and agree the work before fitting.
What the symptoms can tell us
A blank screen, inaccurate reading or absent heating response can result from causes other than a failed thermostat, including supply, wiring, receiver or wider heating trouble. Replacing a unit without checking can leave the original fault unchanged. Controls differ in voltage, terminals, switching approach, sensor arrangements and smart features; physical fit alone does not establish compatibility. On a gas boiler system, thermostat replacement is electrical control work only and does not include gas work or boiler servicing. If you plan to supply a replacement, provide its make and model and retain the old control until the engineer has checked the arrangement.
Checks during the visit
The engineer confirms what symptom has been diagnosed and identifies the existing thermostat, wiring and control arrangement. The proposed replacement is checked for voltage, terminal function, switching type, receiver requirements and suitability for the heating system. The existing unit is removed only after the work is agreed and safe isolation applied where needed. After installation, ordinary settings and a control demand are checked as appropriate. If the candidate unit is not compatible or the fault lies elsewhere, the reason is explained and the replacement is not forced. System-specific wiring and boiler interfaces mean compatibility cannot be promised for every model.
Repair choices and limits
If the chosen thermostat is suitable, an agreed replacement can be fitted and its basic control response assessed. The customer supplies the replacement and any accessories unless otherwise agreed. If the wiring needs alteration, a receiver is required or a separate fault is found, extra work is discussed and quoted first. Repairing the original unit may be an option where parts and model support make sense; replacement is not automatically the only route. App, Wi-Fi and manufacturer service availability are separate and cannot be guaranteed. Any gas-side concern is referred to a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Electrical and heating safety
A thermostat is a control device, not permission to work inside a boiler. Maintenance Men handles thermostat controls and suitable electrical or water-side heating faults within scope, but does not carry out gas work or open a gas boiler to adjust gas components. If symptoms suggest a combustion, flue or other gas-side safety concern, stop using the appliance if advised, leave it unopened, and arrange a Gas Safe registered engineer; an urgent gas smell is not a routine booking. Do not remove covers, probe live terminals or bypass a control. The engineer will explain any limit before proceeding.
Booking, price and next steps
The booking is for the stated diagnostic or defined thermostat visit, not an automatic promise that every fault can be fixed in one appointment. Booking fee is paid when booking; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost for the agreed work is quoted and you approve it before work starts. Any required replacement control, wiring materials or other parts can be identified and quoted separately; parts are not assumed to be included. Availability, compatibility and access may affect the next step. Book online and include the thermostat make and model, heating system type if known, symptoms, and anything already checked.
After the visit
Keep the old thermostat and its paperwork until the new control has been tested, and store the replacement instructions for future settings. Do not discard terminal labels or attempt to copy connections by wire colour. After the visit, use normal controls to verify the heating responds and note any remaining behaviour. If the unit is smart, test local operation independently from app connectivity. Report any recurring issue with the new model details so the next diagnosis can focus on compatibility, supply or system response.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

What our customers say about our heating & radiators service
5 out of 5 from 10 reviews
Fast, tidy and friendly
Booked the £220 booking-fee slot on Tuesday and got a message confirming the time the same morning. The cause was explained, the price agreed before any work started, and the job was done in about 46 minutes. Clean and tidy when they left.
Job: No Heating from Boiler
Turned up when they said
What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 46 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.
Job: Expansion Vessel Fault
Exactly what was quoted
I had put off sorting this for months because I expected a runaround. Quoted the booking fee plus hourly rate upfront, stuck to it, and actually found the underlying cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Worked neatly and hoovered up afterwards.
Job: Airlock in Hot Water System

Questions people ask about thermostat replacement
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Should I buy a new thermostat before the visit?
You can share a candidate model first, but do not assume it matches your wiring or heating system. Compatibility is checked before fitting, and a replacement may not be the answer if another fault is responsible.
What is included in replacement?
The existing control and proposed model are checked for wiring, voltage and system compatibility, then the agreed fitting and basic response are assessed. Additional wiring or control faults require separately approved work.
Does replacement include gas boiler service or gas work?
No. Maintenance Men does not service or carry out gas work on boilers. Thermostat control work is limited to suitable electrical scope, and gas-side concerns are referred.
Do I provide the replacement thermostat?
Yes, unless agreed otherwise. Required accessories are also the customer's responsibility unless stated, and an unsuitable model will not be connected.
What will the price be?
The booking fee is paid when booking; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted for approval before work starts, with parts and materials quoted separately.
