Treat a failing mount as unsafe, starting now

A mount under load that is showing signs of failure is not a decoration problem — it is a falling-object risk. The signs to take seriously: the bracket sitting proud of the wall, fresh cracks radiating from the fixing points, one side sagging, a grinding or creaking sound when anything touches the item, or fixings visibly working loose. From the moment you notice, keep everyone out from underneath, stop using the item, and do not attempt to catch, lift or steady it if it moves. A loaded mount can fail suddenly, and instinctively grabbing a dropping television is how a wall problem becomes an injury. If it comes down on its own, let it, keep clear, and note where and how it was fixed.

The controlled de-rig

When we arrive, the priority is controlled removal of the load. That means supporting the full weight before any fixing is released — for a large screen or heavy item this usually takes two people, and we plan the visit accordingly, so please tell us the approximate weight and size when you book. The item comes down slowly and under control, never dropped or twisted, and is set somewhere safe and out of the way. If any part has already failed and is holding on by a thread, we secure it before working near it. Only when the wall is carrying nothing do we start the assessment.

Assessing what failed and why

With the load off, the evidence is readable. We look at each fixing point: whether the plugs pulled, the plasterboard tore, the masonry crumbled, or the screws simply worked loose. We check the wall construction behind the mount and whether the original installation ever matched it — a heavy item on fixings suited to a lighter one is a common and predictable failure. We also check what lies near the mount: pipes, cables and flues constrain where a repair can safely be drilled, and we plan around likely routes using detection and the usual clues. No check can promise the absence of hidden services, so drilling is always careful and considered.

Repair before re-hang

The wall gets repaired before anything goes back up — never the other way round. Torn plasterboard is filled or, for real weight, backed with a noggin or spreader so the load lands on solid material. Blown masonry holes are rebuilt with repair compound and re-drilled correctly, or the fixing moves to sound material. Fixings are chosen to match both the wall and the load, using the item manufacturer's bracket instructions where they exist. Decoration and paint matching after filling are not included unless agreed separately. The refit itself only happens once we are satisfied the wall can carry the item — and if it cannot, we will say so and discuss alternatives rather than refit onto a surface that will fail again.

When the job needs a specialist

If what we find points beyond a failed fixing — cracking that suggests structural movement, damp or a leak behind the wall, damaged electrics or pipework — we stop, make everything safe and explain what we can see. Those situations need specialist diagnosis, and a repair that hides the evidence would leave the real problem untreated. Our scope here is the mount, the fixing points and the local wall repair; anything deeper is referred honestly.

Booking this visit

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us — for an unsafe mount, sooner is usually the right call, and same-day may be available for making the situation safe. The full cost of the de-rig, assessment and repair is agreed with you and approved before work starts, with any materials quoted separately. Tell us what is mounted, roughly what it weighs, which wall it is on and what you can see happening — that is what we need to come prepared.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

If a mount holding something heavy — a television, a cabinet, a loaded shelf — is cracking, sagging or pulling away from the wall, treat it as unsafe until proven otherwise. Keep people and pets out from under it and do not try to catch or steady the item yourself. Our first job is a controlled de-rig: unload the mount, bring the item down safely, and only then assess what the wall needs.

Questions people ask about unsafe wall mount repair

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I remove the heavy item myself while I wait for you?

Only if it is light enough for you to handle comfortably with help and the mount is still holding firm. If the mount is already moving, sagging or cracking, do not put yourself under it — keep clear and let us do a controlled de-rig with the item properly supported.

What do you inspect once the item is down?

Every fixing point and its failure mode, the wall construction behind the mount, whether the original fixings suited the wall and the load, and what services may run near the repair area. That tells us whether the wall can be repaired for a refit or needs something more.

Will you refit the item during the same visit?

Only if the wall is sound after repair and the fixings can take the load straight away. Where a repair needs curing time before it can carry weight, the item stays safely down and the refit happens on a follow-up visit — we will give you a clear timeline rather than rush it.

What if the mount was fitted with the wrong fixings originally?

That is one of the most common causes, and the repair addresses it directly: the failed holes are closed or rebuilt, and the refit uses anchors matched to the actual wall and the item's weight, following the bracket manufacturer's instructions. The difference is usually the reason the first attempt failed.

How is this kind of visit priced?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how quickly you need the visit. Before work starts we agree the full cost with you and you approve it; any repair materials or replacement fixings are identified and quoted separately.
