Start with the new position, not the old one
Repositioning a fixture is really two jobs in one: establishing a sound fixing somewhere new, and closing off the old position so the wall looks untouched. The order matters. It is no good taking a shelf down and filling the holes if the new position turns out to be unworkable, so we talk through where you want the item before anything comes off the wall — height, what it will hold, and what the wall is made of at that spot.
Choosing fixing points that will actually hold
The new position gets the same scrutiny a fresh installation would. We identify the wall construction — masonry, block, stud partition or plasterboard — and pick a fixing to match. In plasterboard we either find the studwork or use a toggle that spreads the load; in masonry we use plugs sized to the screw and the weight. We also plan around what may be hidden behind the surface: pipes and cables follow routes that are usually predictable, and we combine detection with sensible checks such as socket and switch positions before drilling. Detection informs the plan, but it cannot promise the absence of hidden services, so we always drill with care and stop if anything feels wrong.
One honest caveat: not every wall accepts every fixture. If the new position is all plasterboard with nothing behind it and the item is heavy, we will say so and talk through alternatives — a different wall, a lighter item, or a floor-standing option.
The move itself
With the position agreed, we take the item down carefully, set out the new fixing points from the item's own brackets or template, drill and fix. Items with several fixing points — wide shelves, long picture rails, multi-bracket mounts — are levelled properly rather than eyeballed, because a few millimetres out shows across a metre of shelf. Heavy items may need a second person to lift; if yours does, please mention it when booking so we can arrange the visit accordingly.
Closing off the old position
The old holes are filled with a filler suited to the hole size and the wall, allowed to cure, then sanded back flush. Small holes usually disappear completely once painted over; larger ones may need a second pass of filler. What we do not do by default is repaint — decoration and paint matching are not included unless you have asked for them and we have agreed. If the patch will be visible until you decorate, we will tell you honestly rather than promise an invisible finish.
Preparing and aftercare
Clear the route between the old and new positions and give us floor space at both walls. If the item is a shelf, take what was on it off before we arrive — empty and light is safer to handle. Afterwards, load the refitted fixture gradually, and on anything heavy it is worth a quick check of the fixings a week or two in. If you plan to repaint the filled patches, let the filler dry fully first; we will tell you how long to leave it.
Booking the move
A repositioning visit is booked as a standard handyman call-out: you pay a booking fee when you book, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us, and we agree the full cost with you before any work starts. Same-day slots may be available for straightforward moves. Tell us what is moving, from where to where, and roughly what it weighs — that is enough for us to arrive with the right fixings.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Decided the mirror belongs on the other wall, or the shelf should sit lower? Moving wall fixtures is a genuinely good idea — it just leaves two problems: new fixing points that need to be right, and old holes that need to disappear. We handle both, so the item ends up where you want it and the old position looks like it was never there.

Questions people ask about reposition wall fixtures
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is it worth paying someone to move a shelf or mirror?
If the item is light and the wall is simple, it can be a DIY job. It stops being straightforward when the new position is a different wall type, the item is heavy, or the old holes need a tidy finish — those are the situations where a small job goes wrong and ends up needing repair anyway.
What do you check at the new position before drilling?
The wall construction, what the item weighs and what fixing suits both. We also plan the drill points around likely pipe and cable routes — socket positions, boiler runs and any services you know about all feed into that.
What if the new position lands somewhere awkward?
We will tell you before we drill. Awkward can mean pipes or cables close behind, tile that is hard to fix through, or plasterboard with nothing solid where the weight needs to go. We would rather suggest a slightly different spot than force a fixing that will not hold.
Can you move a fixture to a completely different wall?
Usually yes, as long as the second wall can take a sound fixing and the item does not need to stay connected to anything. We do not reroute electrics, so a light that is moving away from its supply is a job for an electrician, not us.
How is a repositioning visit charged?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We agree the full cost before any work starts, and any filler or hardware is identified separately so you know exactly what you are approving.
