Security starts with an inspection

Anyone can sell you a heavier lock. What actually matters is whether your door, frame and hardware — as a system — give an intruder anything easy to work with. So a door security upgrade with us begins with an honest look at what you have, followed by an honest view of what is worth changing and what is not. We do not promise a security improvement before we have inspected the door, and we will not fit hardware that is wrong for the door just because it was on the list.

What we look at

We assess the door's material and thickness, the frame's condition and how it is fixed, the existing locks and how they engage, the hinges, and any glazing. Each of those has a bearing on what upgrades make sense. A new cylinder in a frame that flexes when pushed is money half spent; a wooden door too thin for a mortice lock needs that said before you buy one. Where the door or frame is in poor condition, repairing that comes first — security hardware fitted into weak timber is decoration, and we will say so rather than fit it anyway.

Practical upgrades we can fit

Depending on the door, sensible options include renewing worn or outdated cylinders on UPVC and composite doors; adding a secondary mortice deadlock to a suitably thick, sound wooden door; fitting hinge-side security bolts on outward-opening wooden doors; upgrading strike plates and using longer fixings that bite properly into the frame; and fitting a security chain or door limiter so you can speak to a caller without opening fully. A letterbox guard on a wooden door with a letterplate near the lock is another small, sensible addition. Hardware is normally supplied by you or quoted separately, and if something you have bought is unsuitable for your door we will say so rather than fit it regardless.

The limits, stated plainly

No lock makes a door unbreakable, and we will not claim otherwise. Determined force, glass panels and weak frames defeat good hardware; the realistic goal is to remove the easy options and buy time, not to promise impenetrability. We are also clear about scope: if you need a full security survey, an alarm system, cameras or monitored protection, that is specialist work, and we will say where our part ends rather than blur the line.

Glazed doors and weak points

We are direct about doors with glazed panels: glass near a lock is a weakness whatever the cylinder's rating, and we will tell you so during the inspection. Options such as laminated panes or internal grilles exist but are specialist glazing jobs rather than handyman work. Older doors with worn joints, and frames with patchy or failing fixings, get the same candour — the point of the inspection is to find the weakest link, not to sell the shiniest part of the catalogue.

Booking

We cover the West Midlands, and same-day appointments may be available depending on when you book. A booking fee is paid when you reserve the slot; the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and the full cost is quoted and approved by you before any work starts. If hardware is needed, it is identified and quoted separately, so you approve the whole job — inspection, repair if required, and hardware — before we start.

After the upgrade

Keep spare keys controlled rather than hidden under anything near the door, and tell everyone in the household how any new chain, limiter or deadlock is meant to be used — hardware that is too fiddly gets left undone, which helps nobody. Check the fixings on the upgraded parts once a year, because timber shrinks and screws loosen with use. If a door fitted with new hardware starts sticking or misalignment creeps in, get it looked at promptly; a lock that has to be forced every time is being weakened every time.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Questions people ask about door security upgrade

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I upgrade my door security myself?

Fitting a security chain or swapping a cylinder is within reach of a confident DIYer, and there is plenty of guidance around. The harder part is knowing what is actually worth doing on your door — hardware fitted to a weak frame or a thin door gives false confidence. An inspection first means the money goes where the weakness actually is.

What do you inspect before recommending security upgrades?

The door's material and thickness, the frame's condition and fixings, the existing locks and how they engage, the hinges, and any glazing. We look at the door as a system, because a strong cylinder in a flexing frame is money half spent. If the door or frame needs repair first, we say that before recommending hardware.

Can you guarantee my door will be secure afterwards?

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. No hardware makes a door unbreakable, and determined force, glazed panels and weak frames defeat good locks; the realistic goal is removing the easy options and buying time. We state the limits plainly during the inspection rather than promising a level of security we cannot deliver.

My front door has glass panels near the lock — is that a problem?

Honestly, yes — glass near a lock is a weakness whatever the cylinder's rating, and we will tell you so. Options such as laminated panes exist but are specialist glazing work rather than a handyman job. What we can do is fit sensible hardware and be clear about where the weak point remains.

How does a security upgrade visit work financially?

You pay a booking fee when you reserve the slot, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost, including any repair work we recommend first, is quoted and approved by you before work starts. Hardware is identified and quoted separately, so nothing is bought until you agree.
