When the fault is not at the switch
A light may flicker, fail intermittently or trip a circuit even though the switch looks intact. The cause can be a damaged cable, loose junction, poor connection at the fitting or wiring altered behind a wall or ceiling. The switch is simply where you interact with the circuit, so its symptoms do not necessarily identify the location of the fault. Replacing the visible switch without testing may make no difference.
Hidden wiring faults can develop after a cable has been pinched, strained, drilled into or affected by moisture. Connections concealed in an accessible junction box may loosen over time, and a poor joint can create intermittent operation or heat. Previous electrical work may also have left an unexpected cable route. If the problem began after shelves, pictures, a loft conversion or other building work, mention it. Do not drill or cut into the wall to investigate; the route of a cable is not always obvious.
Clues that help locate the fault
Describe whether the light flickers when the switch is touched, fails after warming up, or stops working together with other lights. A circuit that trips immediately may point to a different type of fault from one that trips after a period of use. Note any recent leak, condensation, decoration, building work or change of fitting. If the switch is hot, makes a noise, sparks or smells burnt, stop using it and isolate the circuit at the consumer unit if safe.
Tell us whether one switch or several controls operate the same light. Multi-way switching uses connecting conductors between controls, so the fault may be along that route rather than within the wall plate. A flickering light can also be caused by a lamp or fitting, which the electrician will consider alongside the wiring. Keep the affected circuit off if the protective device has tripped; repeatedly resetting it can expose the installation to the same fault again.
Fault-finding without guesswork
The electrician first checks the switch, its connections and the visible cable entry after isolating the circuit. If the switch appears sound, testing helps determine whether the fault is in the cable route, a junction, the light fitting or another control point. The precise tests depend on the symptom and circuit layout. Where the wiring is concealed, the electrician uses circuit information and test results to narrow the likely location before recommending any opening-up work.
Not every hidden fault can be pinpointed from the switch box alone. There may be more than one possible route, and access to a loft, ceiling void or another connection point may be needed. We’ll explain what the results establish, what remains uncertain and how further investigation would reduce that uncertainty. If opening a surface is likely, we’ll discuss the location and the limits of making good. The full cost is quoted before the agreed work starts.
Repair options for concealed wiring
If a loose connection is found in an accessible box, it can be remade and checked. A damaged cable may need repair or replacement, and the safest route depends on where it runs and how much access is available. In some cases a new cable route may be more practical than opening a large area of finished wall. The electrician will explain the choices, including any visible trunking or surface route, before asking you to approve the repair.
After the repair, the circuit is tested and the light controls are checked. If the wiring cannot be accessed or the fault persists, the circuit should remain isolated until a safe solution is agreed. We do not recommend concealing an untested connection behind plaster or relying on a new switch to mask an intermittent fault. If the issue arose after building work, locating the cable route may also help prevent further damage during future drilling or fixing.
What to do while waiting
Keep the affected control off if it is making noise, becoming warm, or showing any sign of arcing. Do not open the wall, ceiling or switch box, and do not try to trace cables with a metal tool. If the breaker has tripped, leave it off. Gather any useful information about the timing, affected lights and recent work, but do not recreate an unsafe symptom.
Book a concealed-wiring fault check
Maintenance Men carries out domestic electrical fault-finding across the West Midlands. Tell us the symptoms, which controls and lights are affected, and any recent drilling, decorating or water ingress. We’ll test the circuit, explain what can be established and discuss access and repair options before opening up finishes. Book an inspection to trace the fault beyond the switch and address the wiring safely.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A switch can be the first place you notice a fault even when the damaged connection is inside a wall, ceiling or another junction. We check the visible switch, then trace the circuit through appropriate tests rather than replacing parts at random. If the fault is concealed, we explain what access is needed and agree the work before opening up finishes.

Does what it says on the tin
No complaints about the work itself — clear explanation, sensible advice, fair price. Booking online was easy enough once I found the right job page.
Job: Smoke Alarm Replacement
Fixed it, but took longer than expected
Work itself was fine and tidy. Communication beforehand was patchy — I did not get the confirmation message and had to ring to check the slot. Would still use again.
Job: Flickering Outdoor Lights
Turned up when they said
Third time we have used Maintenance Men, and the same experience each time: agreed price, proper explanation, job done in one visit. The hourly rate is fair for the standard of work.

Questions people ask about hidden switch wiring fault
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I repair the switch myself?
Do not cut into the wall or remove the switch to trace cables. Stop using the circuit if there is heat, arcing or tripping, and let an electrician use inspection and testing to locate the fault.
What will the electrician check?
They’ll inspect the switch first, isolate and test the circuit, then check accessible fittings, junctions and linked controls to narrow down the concealed fault and advise if further access is needed. They’ll outline the likely access requirements before any opening-up work.
Could this be an electrical safety issue?
A hidden wiring fault can cause intermittent operation, shock risk or overheating. Leave a tripped circuit off and call urgently if there is heat, a burning smell, sparks, water damage or exposed wiring.
How much will the repair cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how quickly you need us. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, so you approve it before any tools come out.
Will you need to cut open the wall?
Not necessarily. Testing and access to the loft, fittings or accessible junctions may locate the problem first. If opening a surface is needed, we’ll explain why and discuss the likely access and making-good requirements before proceeding.
