Standing water in a shower tray is a drainage problem first and a tiling problem second. It is worth finding out which before anyone starts lifting tiles, because a blocked waste is a quick clearance and a badly laid tray is a building job.

The three things that cause it

First, a blocked waste or trap: hair, soap and body oils combine into a dense grey sludge that coats the inside of the waste and the trap below. This is by far the most common cause and it usually develops over months rather than overnight. Second, a trap or waste that cannot cope: shallow traps, flexible corrugated wastes with a dip, or a waste installed with the wrong seal can hold water or drain sluggishly even when clean. Third, a fall problem: the tray is not level, or the waste outlet sits slightly high, so water pools in one corner and only drains once it is deep enough to reach the outlet.

There is a fourth possibility on ground-floor or wet-room installations, where the tray drains into a gully rather than a soil stack. If that gully is blocked or the grating is choked, the tray will not clear no matter how clean its own waste is.

How we diagnose it

We ask whether the water drains away slowly or not at all, whether it drains eventually after standing, and whether the shower is used heavily. A tray that empties overnight has a restriction rather than a total blockage, which is a useful clue. We then remove the waste cover or grate and look at what is in the trap, and we run water to watch where it pools and how fast the level drops.

A spirit level across the tray tells us whether the fall is right. If the tray holds water in one corner and the waste is clear, the answer is likely to be the installation rather than the drainage, and we will say so rather than rodding a pipe that is already fine.

What we can clear on the visit

Accessible traps, waste assemblies and gullies are all fair game. We remove the hair and sludge, flush through, and check that the trap is holding its seal properly afterwards. On a shower tray the trap is often beneath the tray and reached through the waste opening or, on some installations, from a ceiling below or an access panel — we will tell you which yours is before starting, because it affects how much work is involved.

Where the trap is buried under a tiled solid floor with no access, we will not start breaking tiles to reach it without agreeing that with you first. Sometimes a waste can be cleared from above with the right tool; sometimes it cannot.

When the tray or the waste needs attention

A cracked waste body, a perished seal or a corroded chrome grate is a replacement, not a clearance. Replacing a shower waste is usually manageable from above, but reseating a tray that has been laid without a fall, or correcting a waste that sits high, is a bigger job and involves disturbing the tiling and the waterproofing beneath it. That is quoted after we have seen it, and we will be honest when the sensible answer is a specialist bathroom fitter rather than a drainage visit.

Water on the floor and what to do first

Before we arrive, stop using the shower and mop up what you can, because standing water finds its way through tray seals and down into ceilings below. Keep the bathroom ventilated and keep pets and children off the wet floor. If water has reached a light fitting, an extractor or a socket, do not touch it and turn the circuit off at the consumer unit if you can do so safely.

Do not pour caustic drain cleaner into a shower waste. The trap often sits directly below the tray in a confined space, the product can damage plastic and rubber components, and it is unpleasant and hazardous to work on afterwards. Tell us if you have used any.

Afterwards

A hair catch over the waste makes the biggest difference, and a monthly lift-and-rinse of the grate keeps the sludge from setting. If the tray starts holding water again within a few weeks, that is a sign the restriction is further along the run or that the fall is marginal, and it is worth investigating properly rather than clearing it repeatedly.

To book, tell us the postcode, whether the shower is over a bath, a tray or a wet room floor, and whether there is access below. That one detail often decides how long the visit will take.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

A shower tray that holds an inch of water turns a quick wash into a paddle, and the water usually ends up on the bathroom floor. Sometimes it is a simple blockage in the waste; sometimes the tray or the pipe beneath it is the problem. We find out which before recommending work, because the two need very different answers.

Questions people ask about standing water in shower tray

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Can I clear it myself?

You can lift the waste cover or grate and pull out the hair and sludge with a glove or a bent wire, and you can pour a kettle of hot water through afterwards. Do not remove the trap body or unscrew the waste if you are not confident, as the seal can be difficult to reseat.

What will you look at on the visit?

We inspect the waste and trap, test the flow, check the gully if the tray drains to one, and put a level across the tray to see whether the fall is adequate. That tells us whether the problem is a blockage, a fitting or the installation.

Can chemicals damage my shower?

Yes. Caustic products can attack plastic waste bodies and rubber seals, and in a confined trap space they are difficult to rinse out. We would rather clear it mechanically, and we need to know if anything has been poured down before we start.

Why does the water drain away overnight but not during a shower?

That pattern means the pipe is restricted rather than blocked, so a slow trickle gets through but a shower's flow backs up faster than it can leave. It is worth clearing before it closes completely, and it may also point to a marginal fall.

What will it cost?

You pay a booking fee when you book, and labour is charged hourly at a rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost of the work is quoted before we start, parts quoted separately, so the full cost is approved before any tools come out. If the tray needs reseating or the waste replacing, that is quoted as a separate job once we have seen the installation.
