We trace why the machine takes ages to fill – silted valve filters, kinked hoses, valve wear or supply pressure – and put it right, quoting first.

Slow filling is the quiet cousin of the no-fill fault: the machine still works, so it is easy to tolerate, but every cycle stretches, rinses suffer and the machine works harder than it should. A fill that used to take minutes but now takes an age has a physical cause, and it is usually found and fixed in a single visit.
Why the water slows to a trickle
Restrictions accumulate gradually. The inlet valve's filter screen silts up over months, particularly in hard-water areas where scale and sediment build; the flow thins year by year until the fill is glacial. Kinks and crush damage in the inlet hose restrict flow just as effectively – often after the machine was pushed back against the wall. The valve itself can weaken with age, its opening becoming partial. Low household supply pressure is sometimes the real cause, especially in flats with older plumbing or where other taps are drawing water, and sometimes the washer is connected to a supply that was never adequate. Finally, the water-level sensor can misread, causing the machine to cut the fill early or dribble, which mimics a restriction without one being there.
How we diagnose it
We start with the visible path: hose runs checked for kinks and crush points, connections sound, taps fully open. The valve's filter screen is removed and inspected – a silted screen is both the most common cause and the most satisfying fix. We measure the practical flow and compare it with what the supply should deliver, which separates machine faults from household supply issues at a stroke. If the screen and hose are clear, we test the valve's operation and, where indicated, the water-level sensing. The diagnosis distinguishes cleanly between machine parts needing replacement and supply-side matters that belong to your plumbing, and we will tell you which is which.
Repairs and honest limits
A cleaned screen costs nothing in parts. A damaged or chronically kinked hose is cheaply replaced, and upgrading to a flood-prevention hose is worth considering at the same time. A worn valve is replaced – parts exist for most makes, with availability confirmed for your model. If the underlying cause is household supply pressure, no washing machine repair will fix it; we will explain what we measured and what would genuinely help, rather than selling work that will not last. Parts, where needed, are quoted separately and approved before fitting.
Care and prevention
A yearly glance at the hose and a check that the machine has not crushed its hose against the wall prevent most slow-fill faults. If you are in a hard-water area, expect the screen to need attention over the years. Do not remove the valve screen entirely instead of cleaning it – it is there to protect the valve from grit that would destroy it. Avoid cleaning products or descalers poured through the machine beyond what the manufacturer's own cleaning cycles specify. And do not open connections with the tap open; the inlet side is under mains pressure.
Booking your visit
Contact Maintenance Men by phone or the website with the brand and model, roughly how long a fill now takes, whether hot and cold fills are both slow, and anything you have noticed about taps elsewhere in the house. You pay the booking fee when booking, the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need us, and the full cost is quoted and approved before any work starts. Many slow-fill faults are resolved within the first visit. Clearing a silted screen or a swollen hose often restores a full-speed fill within the same visit.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A washing machine that takes half an hour to fill drags out every cycle and often leaves the wash under-rinsed. The cause is usually a restriction on the water path rather than a broken machine. We trace the restriction, clear or replace what is needed, and confirm the fill is back to normal.

Job: Tumble Dryer Not Starting Cycle
Good job, slightly late
Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.
Job: Toaster Not Working
No mess left behind
Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about slow water filling
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Why has my machine gradually started taking longer to fill?
Gradual slowdown almost always means a progressive restriction, most commonly silt or scale on the inlet valve's filter screen, or a hose that has slowly kinked or crushed. Component failure usually arrives suddenly, so a months-long decline points to a restriction rather than a broken part.
Can I clean the inlet valve filter myself?
Sometimes – many machines place a mesh screen in the hose connection end, and cleaning it with the tap closed and machine unplugged is reasonable DIY. Some screens sit inside the machine and are not user-accessible. If cleaning what you can reach does not restore the flow, book a diagnosis.
Could it be the water pressure in my house rather than the machine?
Yes, and we check for it. Low supply pressure, partially closed stopcocks or shared supplies under load all slow filling. We compare the actual flow against what the supply should deliver during diagnosis, and if the machine is innocent we will tell you rather than replace parts needlessly.
Is slow filling actually harming the machine?
It mostly wastes your time and degrades rinse quality, but a chronically starved inlet can make the machine work harder at sensing and cycling, and grit passing a neglected screen can eventually damage the valve. Fixing it is quick, so there is little reason to tolerate it.
What does the repair cost?
You pay a booking fee when booking and an hourly labour rate that depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted before work starts and you approve it. Any parts – hose or valve – are identified during diagnosis and quoted separately with availability confirmed.
