Same-day weak performance

Urgent jobs can often be booked for today. Ask when you book and we will confirm the slot before you pay anything.

Performance loss is the quietest kind of appliance fault. Nothing trips, nothing smells, nothing stops working outright; the machine simply does less than it used to. Because the change is gradual, it is easy to convince yourself the appliance was always like that. It usually was not, and the cause is generally something that wears, blocks or scales rather than an electronics failure.

Gradual decline has physical causes

Small appliances lose performance through four mechanisms. Filters and airways clog, so airflow falls and motors work harder for less result. Elements and waterways scale up, so heat transfer drops and boiling or brewing takes longer. Moving parts wear: carbon brushes shorten, belts slacken, bearings dry out, seals harden. And sometimes the appliance is fine but the thing around it is not — a kinked hose, a full bag, a blocked spout. Knowing which category you are in determines whether the fix is a ten-minute clean or a part.

Start by defining the shortfall

"Not working properly" is not a diagnosis, so we ask what changed and when. Does the vacuum pick up on hard floor but not carpet? Does the kettle boil but take much longer? Does the blender only struggle with thick mixtures? Does the coffee taste weak while the flow looks normal? A precise description of the shortfall often identifies the mechanism before the appliance is even opened, and it stops us chasing a fault that is not there.

Checks by appliance type

On vacuums we look at the hose and wand for obstruction, the filters, the brush bar and belt, and the seal at the bin or bag. On kettles and coffee machines we check for scale on the element and in the waterways, and test the element's resistance. On blenders and food processors we check blade condition, the drive coupling and whether the motor is drawing more current than it should. On irons we look at the soleplate, the steam vents and scale in the chamber. On air fryers we check the element and the circulation fan, because a fan that has slowed will leave food pale on top no matter how good the element is.

Cleaning is not the same as repair

A meaningful share of poor-performance visits end with a thorough clean rather than a replacement part. That is a real result, not a fob-off — a scaled element and a clogged filter genuinely do rob an appliance of most of its capability. But cleaning cannot fix a worn brush, a failing motor winding or a cracked impeller, and we will not present a clean as a cure for an electrical fault. Where the appliance needs descaling or deep cleaning, we follow the maker's instructions and keep water away from electrical and motor parts.

Deciding whether to repair

Once the cause is known, the decision is usually straightforward. Filters, belts, brushes and seals are inexpensive and worth replacing on an otherwise sound appliance. A motor or gearbox on a budget machine often is not. We set out the part, the likely cost of the work and the age of the appliance, and let you make the call. On vacuum cleaners in particular, a worn brush bar and a blocked filter together can make a serviceable machine feel finished, which is worth knowing before you replace it.

Safety and limits

Unplug before any cleaning or inspection, and let heating appliances cool completely. Never put water into a motor housing, and never immerse an appliance that is not designed for it. Microwave casings stay closed: the capacitor holds a dangerous charge after the plug is pulled. If your appliance is a gas type, we do not work on the gas side.

Preparing and booking

Note the make, model and exactly how performance has changed, including when you last changed filters or descaled. Book online with those details. The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit; the full cost is quoted and approved before work begins, with parts quoted separately.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A vacuum that no longer picks up, a kettle that takes twice as long, a blender that labours through the same recipe: none of these are complete failures, so they get tolerated for months. Gradual decline usually has a physical cause — a worn brush, a clogged filter, a scaled element, a tired seal. Our visit identifies which, and whether it is worth putting right.

What our customers say about our home appliances service

4.8 out of 5 from 14 reviews

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 27 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Tumble Dryer Not Starting Cycle

Good job, slightly late

Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.

Job: Toaster Not Working

No mess left behind

Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about weak performance

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Could I just descale or clean it myself first?

Yes, and it is worth doing if the maker's instructions are clear. Use the recommended descaler, keep water out of electrical parts and unplug first. If performance is unchanged afterwards, the cause is elsewhere and worth diagnosing.

What will you check during the visit?

The specific components that govern the shortfall: filters, airways, blades, belts, brushes, seals, element condition and motor current draw. We also confirm the appliance is being used as intended, since a kinked hose or blocked bag mimics a fault.

Is a weak appliance a safety risk?

Not usually, but a motor straining against a blockage runs hotter and draws more current, which shortens its life. If you notice heat, a change in noise or a smell, stop using it until it has been looked at.

My vacuum has good suction at the hose but nothing at the floor head. What does that mean?

That pattern usually points to a blockage or worn brush bar in the floor head itself rather than the machine. Bring the head and wand to the visit so the whole air path can be checked.

What does the visit cost?

The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We confirm the full cost before any work starts, and any parts are identified and quoted separately.
