Most complaints about hobs are about convenience; overheating is the category that's about safety. A hob that scorches its surroundings, makes the worktop hot well beyond cooking time, or trips its safety cut-outs is telling you that something in it — or feeding it — is working harder than it should. This is the fault to stop using and get assessed, not the one to watch for a fortnight.
The signs that matter
Some warmth around a cooking surface during and just after use is normal — the glass of a ceramic hob gets genuinely hot in use, and residual heat lingers. The warning signs sit beyond that: a worktop or cupboard above or below that stays hot long after cooking, scorch marks or discolouration around the hob, a burning smell that isn't from the food, zones that seem to run at full power regardless of setting, repeated cut-outs, or a breaker that trips during or after use. Any of these justifies stopping use and isolating the hob.
Why hobs overheat
The usual mechanisms are resistive connections — a terminal or connector that has loosened or burnt, generating heat of its own every time current flows — and failing elements that run hot unevenly. Control faults can hold a zone at maximum output regardless of the setting; boards can fail in ways that overdrive components; blocked ventilation beneath the hob starves it of cooling. Occasionally the cause is upstream — a degrading supply connection in the isolator or behind the hob. Each has a different fix, which is why diagnosis precedes any quote.
How we assess it
The engineer inspects the connections at the hob and isolator for scorching and resistive damage, tests the elements and their behaviour across settings, checks the control system for faults that hold output high, and examines ventilation and installation clearances. We use thermal observation and electrical testing together, because overheating faults leave evidence in both. The findings are explained in plain language, with repair or replacement options priced before anything is agreed.
What the repair looks like
Resistive connections are repaired or replaced, and the damaged surrounding material made safe. Failed elements are replaced with the correct part for your model, quoted separately from labour. Board faults get the honest cost comparison against the hob's age. And where the installation itself is the problem — a hob boxed in, a cupboard crammed against it, inadequate clearances — we explain the fix, which may be as simple as clearing the space or as involved as reworking the install, quoted either way.
Between now and the visit
Leave the hob switched off at the isolator. Don't store anything flammable in the cupboard beneath or beside it, and don't cover the hob surface. If you smell burning strongly, see smoke or feel excessive heat spreading beyond the appliance, treat that as more urgent — isolate if safe, and call the fire service if there's any fire.
If your appliance is gas, heat and combustion problems are the gas side — Maintenance Men is not Gas Safe registered and doesn't carry out gas work; those faults go to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer, and any suspected gas smell means the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 first.
Booking urgently and sensibly
Tell us the brand and model, exactly what you've observed, when it happens, and whether anything has tripped. Book by phone or website; the booking fee is paid when you book, the hourly rate depends on how soon you need us — and for a suspected overheating fault, we'd suggest soon. No repair starts until you've approved the full written quote.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Signs that a hob is running hotter than it should — scorch marks, hot worktop around the unit, smells of overheating, or safety cut-outs — deserve immediate attention. Overheating points to failing components or connections that can worsen. We diagnose the cause safely and tell you plainly what needs doing.

Job: Tumble Dryer Not Starting Cycle
Good job, slightly late
Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.
Job: Toaster Not Working
No mess left behind
Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about hob overheating risk
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Is an overheating hob dangerous?
It can be — overheating components and connections are a known fire risk pathway. Stop using the hob, switch it off at the isolator and book an assessment rather than waiting to see whether it settles down.
What causes a hob to overheat?
Failing elements, resistive (burnt or loose) connections, control faults that hold zones at maximum, blocked ventilation, or a failing board driving components beyond design. Distinguishing between these needs testing, not guessing.
Is some heat around the hob normal?
Some warmth above and around the cooking surface during and shortly after use is normal. What isn't normal: a hot worktop or cupboard well away from cooking time, scorching, discoloured surrounding surfaces, or a persistent burning smell. Those need assessment.
What if the hob is gas?
Combustion and gas-side heat problems are gas work — Maintenance Men is not Gas Safe registered and doesn't carry out gas work. We'd refer gas faults to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer, and any suspected gas smell means calling 0800 111 999 immediately.
How is the visit charged?
A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the engineer. Diagnosis is explained first; the full repair cost is quoted and approved by you before work starts, with parts priced separately.
