A hob that lights up but delivers no heat is frustrating precisely because it seems so close to working. On an electric or induction hob the heat comes from elements or coils beneath the ceramic surface, and when one or all of them fail the controls can still appear perfectly normal. The good news is that many no-heat faults trace back to something simple: a tripped isolator, a failed element, a burnt connection or a control board problem that a competent engineer can identify quickly.
What usually causes a hob to stop heating
If a single zone has gone cold while the others work, that points to an individual element or its connector — parts do fail with age, and repeated heating cycles eventually take their toll. If every zone is dead, the problem is more likely upstream: the isolator switch, the cooker circuit breaker, the terminal connections behind the hob or the hob's internal control board. Induction hobs add another layer, because the electronics that drive the coils can fail even when the glass and controls look fine.
Occasionally the hob is actually working but locked or limited — a child lock, a timer function or a residual heat indicator can make a zone appear dead when it isn't. It's always worth ruling these simple explanations out before assuming the worst.
How we diagnose the fault
Our engineer starts with the supply: confirming the isolator is on, the breaker hasn't tripped, and the correct voltage is reaching the hob. From there we test the hob's elements, wiring and controls in a safe, systematic order until the failed part is isolated. Because the diagnosis is done before any repair is agreed, you know exactly what is wrong and what fixing it involves before you commit to anything.
Repair or replace
A failed element or connector on a good-quality hob is often worth repairing, and we can source and fit suitable parts with the cost quoted first. If the control board has failed on an older or budget hob, the economics change — a replacement board can approach the price of a new appliance, and we'll say so honestly rather than selling you a repair that doesn't make sense. If you decide to replace the hob instead, we can quote for fitting the new one, including checking the existing supply and connections are suitable.
Safety around a faulty hob
Never probe inside a hob or remove the surface to look at elements yourself. The supply to an electric hob is capable of delivering a severe or fatal shock, and unlike a plug-in appliance it can't simply be pulled out of the socket. If the hob has been tripping breakers, scorching, or you notice a burning smell, stop using it and leave it switched off at the isolator until it has been assessed.
One boundary worth stating plainly: if your hob is gas rather than electric, faults involving ignition, burners or the gas supply are gas work. Maintenance Men is not Gas Safe registered and doesn't carry out gas work, so we'd diagnose only what can safely be checked from the electrical side and refer gas-related faults to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer.
When to book
Book as soon as the fault appears rather than cooking around a dead zone for weeks — some connection faults get worse with use. When you contact us, tell us the hob's brand and model, whether it's ceramic, induction or another type, and exactly what it does and doesn't do: whether all zones are cold or just one, whether the controls respond, and whether anything tripped when the fault started. That information lets us arrive with the right test approach and, in many cases, an idea of the likely parts in advance. Booking takes a couple of minutes by phone or through the website, and we'll confirm the visit, the booking fee and the hourly rate that applies given how soon you need us.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
A hob that powers on but never gets hot turns every meal into a workaround. Often the cause is a failed element, a faulty connector or a problem with the cooker circuit rather than the whole appliance. Our engineer tests safely, identifies where the fault actually sits and gives you a clear quote before anything is repaired.

Questions people ask about hob not heating
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I fix a hob that isn't heating myself?
Checking that the hob is switched on at the isolator and that a timer or child lock hasn't been activated is sensible DIY. Anything beyond that means working inside or around the appliance, which we don't recommend — electric hobs are fed by a circuit capable of delivering a serious shock even when controls appear off.
What do you check during the visit?
We confirm the supply and isolator, test the circuit feeding the hob, then check the hob's elements, connections and controls to find which part has failed. You get a plain explanation of the cause and the repair options before we touch anything beyond diagnosis.
Is a dead element dangerous to keep using?
An element that has failed open is usually simply useless rather than dangerous, but faults that involve burning smells, scorching or tripping breakers should not be ignored. Stop using the hob and book an assessment rather than cooking on a suspect circuit.
My hob is gas — can you still help?
If your hob is gas, the fault may sit with the ignition, flame or gas side of the appliance, which Maintenance Men does not work on. We can carry out safe electrical checks where relevant and, if the fault is gas-related, recommend a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer.
How much does the visit cost?
You pay a booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the engineer. The full cost of any repair is quoted and approved by you before work starts, and any replacement parts are identified and quoted separately.
