'Electrical fault' is what most people call a hob problem they can't otherwise describe — and it covers everything from a two-minute connection repair to a failed control board. The difference matters enormously to your wallet, which is why we treat diagnosis as the job, not a formality before the job.

Where hob electrical faults actually live

An electric hob is a collection of high-power components and electronics sharing one enclosure. Faults cluster in predictable places: elements that fail open or partially, terminals and connectors that overheat through years of thermal cycling, internal wiring that chafes or burns, power sections and control boards that fail with age, and fuses that blow protecting everything else. Around the appliance sits the supply itself — the isolator, the cooker circuit and the connections where the hob meets the wiring.

Different causes can produce near-identical symptoms, and that's the trap. A dead zone could be element, connector or control path. Random cut-outs could be electronics or a marginal supply. Guessing means paying for parts that don't fix it.

How we narrow it down

Our engineer works from the outside in: supply voltage and circuit health first, then the hob's connection point, then internal testing of elements, wiring and electronics. Where a fault code exists we use it, but we don't rely on it — codes point, tests prove. You get the findings in plain English: what failed, why it happened, and what the realistic options are.

Repair economics, stated honestly

A burnt connector or failed element is usually a sensible repair, and we can identify and source the correct part, quoting it separately from labour. Control boards are the turning point: replacement parts for premium hobs are often worth fitting, while on older or budget appliances the board can cost close to a new hob. We'll say which situation you're in rather than fit parts on principle. And if the honest answer is 'this hob isn't worth repairing', we'll say that too, along with a quote for fitting a replacement if you want one.

The safety part you shouldn't skip

Two things we insist on. First, don't open a hob's casing yourself: the internal supply can deliver severe or fatal shocks, and hobs can't simply be unplugged like a kettle. Second, treat warning signs as stop signals — burning smells, scorching, sparking, breakers that trip repeatedly. Switch the hob off at the isolator and book an assessment.

If your appliance is gas, most burner and ignition problems sit on the gas side. Maintenance Men is not Gas Safe registered and doesn't carry out gas work of any kind; we'd recommend a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer for that, and confine our involvement to any genuinely electrical checks within safe limits.

Why intermittent faults deserve prompt attention

Electrical faults that come and go are the ones that reward quick action. A connection that only misbehaves when hot is degrading with every cycle, and the repair cost at first diagnosis is usually a fraction of what it becomes after months of use — burnt terminals take surrounding wiring with them. If your fault is intermittent, describe exactly when it happens: which settings, how long into use, whether the kitchen is humid. That pattern is diagnostic gold, and it lets us arrive with the right tests ready rather than discovering them on site.

Booking your diagnosis

When you contact us, give the brand and model, what the fault does and when — intermittent or constant, which zones, whether it coincides with trips, smells or heat — plus anything a previous engineer said. That history shapes a faster, cheaper diagnosis. Book by phone or website; the booking fee is taken at that point, the hourly rate depends on how quickly you need us, and no repair begins until you've seen and approved the full quote.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A vague 'electrical fault' label helps nobody, least of all the person paying for the repair. Hobs combine mains voltage, heating elements and modern electronics, so faults need proper testing to pin down. We diagnose to component level where it matters, then give you a priced, honest decision about repair versus replacement.

Job: Tumble Dryer Not Starting Cycle

Good job, slightly late

Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.

Job: Toaster Not Working

No mess left behind

Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about hob electrical fault

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

What counts as an electrical hob fault?

Anything in the hob's electrical system: failed elements, burnt terminals or connectors, damaged internal wiring, blown fuses, control board faults or problems in the circuit feeding the hob. These overlap in symptoms, which is why systematic testing beats parts-swapping.

Is it safe to keep using a hob with an intermittent electrical fault?

Not if the fault involves burning smells, scorching, sparking or tripping breakers — stop using it and isolate at the wall switch. Purely functional faults such as a dead zone are less urgent, but they rarely improve and can deteriorate.

Can you repair control boards?

We diagnose board faults and quote replacement with the correct part for your model. Board-level component repair isn't always available or sensible, so we compare the replacement cost honestly against the hob's age and value before you decide.

What if the fault is actually in my kitchen wiring?

That's exactly what diagnosis is for — if testing shows the supply or circuit is at fault rather than the hob, we explain that and quote the electrical repair instead of selling you a hob fix you don't need.

How are costs structured?

A booking fee is paid when booking, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the engineer. The full repair cost is quoted and approved by you before work starts, with any parts identified and quoted separately.
