A hob's buttons are the whole interface between you and the heat, so when they stop working the appliance becomes either unusable or worse — a source of heat you can't reliably turn off. Control faults range from a five-second fix to a failing board, and telling those apart is what a proper diagnosis is for.
The checks that cost you nothing
Start with the basics that resolve a surprising share of complaints. Power the hob down at the isolator for a minute and back on — a reset clears several control glitches. Check whether a child lock or hold function is active; on many models a stray long-press activates one, and the manual lists the unlock combination. Then clean the panel properly with a dry or barely damp cloth: grease films, condensation from a covered pot and spillover residue all confuse capacitive touch controls into registering phantom touches or refusing yours. A panel that behaves after cleaning and a reset needed an engineer's visit for nothing.
When it's a genuine fault
If a clean, unlocked, reset panel still ignores you, the likely culprits are a failed touch membrane or panel, a fault in the control board behind it, a damaged ribbon connection between the two, or moisture that has worked its way in over years of steam and spillovers. Patterns help diagnosis: one dead button suggests local wear, whole sections dying suggests the board, behaviour that changes with kitchen humidity suggests moisture ingress, and controls that fail only when the hob is hot suggest a heat-sensitive component.
What the engineer does
We verify the supply reaching the controls, test the panel and board connections, and observe the fault's behaviour against temperature and use. Where the model offers diagnostic modes or fault codes, we use them — but we confirm findings with tests rather than trusting codes alone. You get a specific diagnosis in plain English before any repair is priced: panel, board, connection or environment.
The repair decision
Control panels and boards are model-specific replacement parts, quoted separately from labour and fitted only with your approval. On a good hob the repair usually makes sense; on an older one, a control board can approach the price of a new appliance, and we'll put that comparison in front of you honestly. If replacement is your choice, we can quote installing the new hob too.
Safety while the fault continues
Don't cook on a hob whose controls behave unpredictably — if you can't trust the panel to respond, be ready to cut power at the isolator and treat the appliance as not-yet-safe until fixed. And don't open the casing to reseat connections yourself: internal voltages remain dangerous after power-off, and capacitive panels are easy to damage further. If your hob is gas, remember the gas side — burners, valves and supply — is strictly Gas Safe territory; Maintenance Men doesn't carry out gas work and would refer gas faults to a trusted Gas Safe registered engineer.
Intermittent button faults and what they mean
Buttons that work some days and not others usually point to a connection on its way out or early moisture ingress — and they're worth chasing sooner rather than later, because both progress. Note the conditions when it fails: hot or cold hob, steamy kitchen or dry, after cooking or before. Three or four observations of that kind give us more diagnostic direction than an hour of on-site probing, so jot them down before you book. Patterns are cheap to collect and expensive to rediscover.
Booking
Tell us the brand and model, which buttons fail, whether the fault is constant or comes and goes, and what you've already tried, including any error codes shown. Book by phone or website; the booking fee is paid when you book, the hourly rate depends on how soon you need the visit, and no repair begins until you've approved the full quote.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
Buttons that do nothing, or a panel that only half-responds, leave you cooking on a hob you can't command. Sometimes the cause is as simple as a lock or a dirty panel; often it's a failing board or connection. We diagnose properly and price the repair before touching anything beyond the testing.

Questions people ask about hob buttons not working
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
What can I try before booking an engineer?
Power the hob down at the isolator for a minute, check whether a child lock or hold function is active (check the manual for the exact button combination), and clean the panel with a dry cloth — moisture and grease confuse touch controls. If the buttons still don't work, book a diagnosis.
Why do only some buttons fail?
Partial failures point to specific faults: a worn button on mechanical panels, or a damaged section of the touch membrane or board on capacitive models. It can also indicate early moisture ingress that will eventually affect more of the panel.
Can individual buttons be replaced?
Usually the panel or board is replaced as a complete part for your model rather than individual buttons. We identify the correct component, quote it separately from labour and fit it only with your approval.
Is a faulty control panel a safety risk?
It can be — controls you can't rely on mean heat you can't turn down or off promptly. Until it's fixed, be ready to use the isolator switch, and stop using the hob entirely if the controls behave unpredictably.
How is the visit charged?
A booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the engineer. Diagnosis comes first; any repair is quoted in full and approved by you before work starts, with parts priced separately.
