Dryer Cycles Taking Far Too Long? We Diagnose the Slowdown

We compare heat output, airflow and sensor behaviour against how the machine should perform to explain the extra hours.

Booking fee plus hourly labour — the price is confirmed before any work starts.

Same-day long drying time

Urgent jobs can often be booked for today. Ask when you book and we will confirm the slot before you pay anything.

Drying time creeps up so slowly that it is easy to miss. A dryer that once finished a load in an hour may now need two, and the laundry still feels cool and slightly damp at the end. Because there is no dramatic failure, the cause is often a partial one: airflow reduced by lint, a heater running below its rated output, a thermostat switching early, or a moisture sensor that no longer reads accurately and keeps the cycle running.

Understanding what "long" means

Manufacturer cycle times are measured under specific conditions: a defined load, a defined room temperature and a correctly installed vent. A cold utility room, a long flexible vent with several bends, or a load of heavy towels will all extend the time legitimately. Before treating it as a fault, note the load type and size, the room temperature and whether the vent run is short and rigid or long and flexible.

What you can check

Clean the filter, clean the condenser on a condensing model, empty the water container, and straighten the vent hose. Check that the outside flap opens freely when the machine runs, and that nothing is blocking the termination. Try a smaller load of similar fabrics and use a sensor-dry programme rather than a timed one. If the improvement is marginal, the fault is internal.

How we diagnose slow drying

We measure the current drawn by the heater to see whether the full element is working. We check the temperature rise across the drum, test the thermostats at their switching points, and measure airflow at the filter, the condenser and the vent outlet. The moisture sensor bars and their circuit are tested. On heat-pump machines we check the fan, the coils and the compressor, and read any stored fault codes. Comparing these readings tells us whether the machine is short of heat, short of air, or simply running longer because it cannot tell when the load is dry.

The common culprits

A partially failed element, a lazy thermostat, a lint-packed condenser, a crushed or over-long vent, a coated moisture sensor, a failing fan, and on heat-pump models a declining compressor or a blocked evaporator. Blocked venting is the most frequent and the most important to correct, because restricted airflow also raises the risk of overheating.

Repair decisions

Cleaning, sensor replacement, thermostats and elements are all reasonable repairs on a sound machine. A fan motor or a heat-pump component may cost more, and we will compare that with replacement honestly. If the vent installation itself is the problem, no amount of repair will fix it and the route needs changing, which we can explain and quote for separately.

Safety and efficiency

Never run a dryer with a disconnected vent or with the door ajar to speed things up; both make the problem worse and increase fire risk. Do not uprate fuses or bypass thermal cut-outs. Keep the machine's rear clearance as the manual specifies, and avoid pushing it tight against a wall where the vent can kink.

After the repair

Time a normal load before and after so you can see the difference objectively. Clean the filter every cycle from now on, and book a vent clean annually if the run is long. If the cycle time creeps up again, tell us early; a partial blockage is cheaper to deal with than a failed heater.

Booking

Tell us the current cycle time, what it used to be, the load type and the dryer type, plus whether the load is damp or merely cool at the end. Mention any fault code and what you have already cleaned, so the first visit is spent measuring rather than repeating checks.

How the price works

We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

Booked 14+ days ahead

£25 booking fee

then £85 per hour of labour

Best value. Book the slot now, pay the smallest booking fee.

Booked within 48 hours

£100 booking fee

then £65 per hour of labour

For jobs that can wait a day or two but not a fortnight.

Same-day call-out

£220 booking fee

then £45 per hour of labour

Urgent problems: standing water, no heat, no power, leaks.

1

Book the slot

Choose the window that suits you and pay the booking fee. That holds your place in the diary.

2

We diagnose on site

The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.

3

You approve, we work

Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.

A cycle that used to take ninety minutes now runs for three hours and still leaves the load slightly damp. Slow drying is a gradual fault, which is why it is often tolerated for months before anyone books a repair. The visit measures what the machine is actually doing, because the cause is usually a decline in airflow or heat rather than a single broken part.

What our customers say about our home appliances service

4.8 out of 5 from 14 reviews

Exactly what was quoted

What I appreciated was being told what was actually wrong before anyone started. Sorted in under 27 minutes and the invoice matched the quote to the penny.

Job: Tumble Dryer Not Starting Cycle

Good job, slightly late

Solid work. Hourly rate feels fair for the amount of work involved and everything was tested before they left. Would book again.

Job: Toaster Not Working

No mess left behind

Really straightforward. It had been bothering us for weeks; diagnosed properly, fixed the same visit, and the price was exactly what was explained when booking. Can not fault it.

Questions people ask about long drying time

Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.

Is a long cycle always a fault?

No. Cold rooms, heavy loads, long flexible vent runs and eco programmes all extend drying time legitimately. If the time has clearly increased compared with how the machine used to perform, that is worth investigating.

What do you measure during the visit?

We measure heater current, the temperature rise across the drum, airflow at the filter, condenser and vent, and the moisture sensor circuit. On heat-pump models we also check the fan, coils and compressor and read stored fault codes.

Can I make it faster by disconnecting the vent?

No, and you should not. That releases moist air and lint into the room, reduces drying performance and increases fire risk. Check the vent for kinks and blockages instead, and have it cleaned if needed.

What if the vent installation is the real problem?

Then the repair has to address the route, not just the appliance. Over-long or badly routed flexible ducting restricts airflow whatever the dryer does, and we will explain what needs changing and quote for that work separately.

How does the pricing work?

You pay the booking fee when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost for your approval before work starts, and any parts are identified and quoted separately.
