Air fryers rely on two things working together: a heating element and a fan that drives hot air around the basket. When either one falters, the result is food that looks cooked on the outside and raw within, or a basket that never gets hot at all. Because the symptoms overlap, the appliance has to be tested rather than guessed at.
How an air fryer actually cooks
Unlike a conventional oven, an air fryer does not rely on radiant heat alone. The element heats, and the fan pushes that air at speed across and around the food. That moving air is what produces the crisp exterior, and it is why a working element with a failed fan produces disappointing results rather than no results. The thermostat and thermistor monitor the cavity temperature and cycle the element, and a thermal cut-out protects against runaway heat. Four components, four distinct failure modes.
Matching symptom to component
If the air fryer is completely cold and the display works, the element circuit or the thermal cut-out is the likely cause. If it heats but food is pale on top and cooked underneath, or cooks very unevenly, the circulation fan or its drive is suspect. If it heats far too aggressively and scorches, a thermostat or thermistor fault is likely. If it runs for a few minutes and then stops, a thermal cut-out is operating because something is running hotter than designed, and the reason needs establishing rather than the cut-out resetting.
What the visit covers
The appliance is unplugged and cooled. We inspect the element for continuity and for visible damage, check the fan for free rotation and correct operation, test the thermostat and thermistor, and check the thermal cut-out. We also look at the air path: a basket or tray that has been fitted incorrectly, or a heavily carbonised interior, can obstruct circulation and mimic a mechanical fault. Wiring and terminations are inspected for heat damage, and the plug and flex are checked.
Cleaning, and where it stops being the answer
Air fryers collect carbonised grease on the element guard and around the fan, and a buildup restricts airflow and produces uneven results. Cleaning that is genuinely user-level: unplug, cool completely, remove the basket and trays, wash them as the maker instructs, and wipe the interior without putting water into the element housing or fan motor. What cleaning cannot do is restore a broken element or a seized fan bearing. If a deep clean leaves the appliance behaving exactly as before, the fault is internal.
Repair or replace
Fans, thermostats and thermal cut-outs are modest parts and reasonable repairs where they are available for your model. Elements are more variable: on some models they are replaceable, on others they are built into a housing that is supplied as a unit. Air fryers are also relatively inexpensive, so a major repair on a budget model rarely stacks up. We identify the part, check availability and quote it separately, and we will tell you honestly when replacement is the better choice.
Safety points
Unplug before cleaning or inspection and allow the appliance to cool fully — air fryer interiors stay hot for longer than people expect. Never put water into the element housing or the fan motor, and never immerse the main body. Do not bypass a thermal cut-out or continue using an appliance that trips the RCD, smokes or smells of burning. Do not line the basket in ways that block airflow; that is a common cause of overheating.
Booking
Book online with the make, model and a description of what the food comes out like, plus whether the fan can be heard running. The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. The full cost is quoted and approved before work starts, with any parts identified and quoted separately.
How the price works
We charge a booking fee to hold your slot, then an hourly rate for the work itself. The fee changes with how soon you need us; the hourly rate changes with the slot you choose. You approve the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the invoice.

We diagnose on site
The engineer confirms the cause and tells you what the job involves and how long it should take.
You approve, we work
Nothing goes ahead until you agree the price. Labour is then charged per hour at your slot rate.
An air fryer that runs but leaves food pale, cooks unevenly or never gets hot is usually suffering from a failed element, a stalled circulation fan or a thermostat that no longer reads correctly. These are testable faults, and the difference between them matters: a fan fault often costs far less to fix than the element. We diagnose the fault and tell you whether the repair is worthwhile.

Questions people ask about air fryer not heating
Straight answers to the things customers ask most often before booking.
Can I fix it myself?
Cleaning the basket, trays and interior is safe and worthwhile with the appliance unplugged and cold. Testing or replacing the element, fan or thermostat is not a sensible DIY job, because the interior combines mains wiring with high temperature.
What will you check?
The element for continuity and damage, the circulation fan for free rotation and correct running, the thermostat and thermistor, the thermal cut-out, the air path for obstruction and the wiring for heat damage. The appliance is unplugged and fully cooled before any of it is checked.
It heats but the food is pale on top. Is that a fault?
Usually yes — that pattern points to reduced airflow rather than a failed element. A stalled or slow fan, or a blocked air path, is the usual explanation and is often cheaper to fix than an element.
Is it safe to keep using an air fryer that cuts out?
Treat it as a warning. A thermal cut-out that keeps operating means the appliance is running hotter than intended, and continuing to use it risks damaging components or worse. Have it checked.
What does the visit cost?
The booking fee is paid when you book, and the hourly labour rate depends on how soon you need the visit. We quote the full cost and you approve it before work begins; parts are identified and quoted separately.
